FirstCry parent Brainbees Solutions reported a 34% drop in Q1 FY27 losses to Rs 44 crore, supported by a 13% revenue rise to Rs 2,106 crore. While the India business showed strong momentum, the company faced margin pressure due to intense competition, especially in the diapering category.
Brainbees Solutions, the parent company of the children's retailer FirstCry, released its financial results for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. The company reported a net loss of Rs 44 crore, narrowing significantly from the Rs 66.5 crore loss recorded in the same period last year. Revenue from operations also saw a healthy increase of 13%, reaching Rs 2,106 crore, which marks the company's strongest revenue growth in five quarters.
The growth was primarily led by the company's domestic operations. The India business reported a 17.7% increase in revenue, touching Rs 1,455.9 crore. This segment also saw its Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) rise by 12% to Rs 2,380.9 crore, driven by a higher volume of orders and an increase in the number of unique customers shopping on the platform. The international segment, operating in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, also contributed to the top-line growth with a 12% revenue increase to Rs 232 crore, alongside a reduction in EBITDA losses.
Despite the clear growth in sales, profitability metrics came under pressure during the quarter. Consolidated adjusted EBITDA fell to Rs 89 crore from Rs 93 crore a year ago. Additionally, gross margins contracted to 36.5% from 38.5% in the previous year. The management highlighted that this margin pressure is largely linked to intense competitive pricing within the diapering category. While this specific category faces stiff competition, the company noted that its non-diapering portfolio, which accounts for approximately 85% of its total GMV, has maintained a more stable performance.
Brainbees has been investing in its delivery infrastructure, including services like RocketBees and FirstCry Qwik, to improve service speed in various cities. Following the results, the company's stock witnessed a positive movement on August 14, 2026, reflecting investor sentiment toward the improving revenue and narrowing losses despite the ongoing margin challenges.
Looking ahead, the primary focus for investors will be how the company balances its growth with profitability, particularly in the competitive diapering segment. Other factors that could impact the company include changes in input costs, such as crude oil prices which can affect product costs, and currency fluctuations in its international markets. Investors will likely track the company's ability to defend its margins while continuing to expand its customer base and service network.
