BlueStone reported a 45% revenue jump to Rs 745 crore for the September quarter but posted a net loss of Rs 4.4 crore. The results reflect the impact of aggressive store expansion and higher operational costs during the period. Investors will watch how the company balances its fast-paced retail growth with the need to return to consistent profitability.
BlueStone, the omnichannel jewelry retailer, witnessed a strong rise in its business activity during the quarter ending September. The company recorded an operating revenue of Rs 745 crore, marking a 45% increase compared to the Rs 513.6 crore reported in the same quarter last year. When including other income of Rs 24.4 crore, the total revenue reached Rs 769 crore. Despite this top-line growth, the company reported a net loss of Rs 4.4 crore for the second quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, shifting away from the profit seen in the previous quarter.
Aggressive Store Expansion Pressures Bottom Line
The financial results highlight a period of significant investment for the company. BlueStone’s strategy of rapidly expanding its physical footprint is the primary driver behind the rising costs. The company opened 27 new stores during the quarter, bringing its total network to 379 locations across 146 cities. This physical expansion comes with substantial overheads, including rent, staffing, and store setup costs. Consequently, the company's total expenses climbed by 34% to Rs 772 crore for the quarter. Higher raw material costs and increased spending on employee benefits were identified as key contributors to these rising operational expenses.
While the company recorded a loss this quarter, a look at the year-on-year data suggests that the business is showing improvement in its financial efficiency. The current loss of Rs 4.4 crore is a 92% narrowing compared to the Rs 52 crore deficit reported in the same period a year ago. This indicates that despite the increased spending, the scale of operations is helping the company move toward better financial footing.
Operational Strength and Customer Loyalty
BlueStone continues to leverage its model of combining online and physical sales. Currently, over 80% of the company's sales are generated through online channels, demonstrating the core strength of its digital platform. Management has maintained that the business model remains resilient, especially in the face of volatile gold prices and shifting festive demand patterns. Customer retention remains a critical performance indicator, with repeat customers accounting for 56.3% of total revenue. This is an improvement from the 51.4% recorded in the previous year, suggesting that the company is successfully building a loyal user base, which now exceeds 10 lakh customers.
For investors, the key area to monitor in the coming quarters will be the company’s ability to turn its rapid store expansion into sustainable profit. While revenue growth is robust, the rising expenditure indicates that the focus remains heavily on capturing market share. The ability to manage these costs as the new stores stabilize will be the main factor to watch in future financial disclosures.
