Amazon Scales Delivery to 120 Cities Before Festive Sale

Amazon India has expanded its ultra-fast 'Amazon Now' delivery service to 120 cities, utilizing nearly 800 fulfillment centers. This move aims to capture demand during the Great Indian Festival beginning October 8, 2026. Investors are watching how the company competes with quick-commerce rivals like Blinkit and Zepto while maintaining service quality during high-volume periods.

Amazon India is fast-tracking its logistics infrastructure ahead of the upcoming festive season, expanding its 'Amazon Now' ultra-fast delivery service to cover 120 cities. The initiative focuses on delivering essentials, groceries, and electronics rapidly, just in time for the Great Indian Festival, which is scheduled to commence on October 8, 2026.

This expansion is a significant strategic move following the unit's recent performance. The service achieved $1 billion in annualized gross sales over the three-month period leading up to September 2026. To support this growth, Amazon is utilizing a network of nearly 800 micro-fulfillment and urban distribution centers. By placing inventory closer to the end consumer, the company is attempting to minimize last-mile delivery times, which is essential for capturing market share in the quick-commerce segment.

Strategic Competition and Market Pressure

The Indian e-commerce landscape is increasingly defined by delivery speed. This aggressive push puts Amazon in direct competition with specialized quick-commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart. While Amazon benefits from a large existing user base and integrated logistics, the move requires managing a complex and expensive supply chain. To incentivize adoption, the company has partnered with the State Bank of India to offer a 10% instant discount on transactions, a tactical move designed to boost gross merchandise value during the peak shopping window.

Operational Risks and Future Outlook

Scaling such a fast delivery network across a diverse set of 120 cities, including regional hubs, carries notable execution risks. Investors may monitor how the company maintains its promised delivery speeds as order volumes surge during the festive festival. The high cost of maintaining a dense urban distribution network can also exert pressure on profit margins. Additionally, macro-economic factors, such as rising logistics and packaging costs, could further impact the financial viability of this rapid expansion.

Looking ahead, management has indicated a long-term goal to extend this service to over 300 cities. The primary monitorable for the coming months will be the company's ability to maintain service standards under high volume. Whether the infrastructure can support this scale without compromising efficiency will be the key test for Amazon's competitive position against both traditional e-commerce rivals and the new generation of quick-commerce players.
