Amazon India Adds 160,000 Seasonal Staff for Festive Season

Amazon India is recruiting 160,000 seasonal workers across 400 cities to handle the expected surge in festive orders. While this move strengthens delivery capabilities, investors are tracking how the company balances high operational spending with its goal of narrowing losses in its Indian marketplace business.

Amazon India has announced a major workforce expansion, hiring 160,000 seasonal staff to manage the upcoming festive shopping season. This recruitment drive, which covers 400 cities, is designed to handle the increased load in fulfillment centers, sorting facilities, and final-mile delivery networks.

Scaling Operations for Peak Demand

The initiative aims to ensure that the company maintains its delivery speed and service quality during a period when e-commerce activity in India typically hits its annual high. The hired staff will assist in critical tasks like order picking, packing, and sorting. To support this large workforce, the company is also expanding its 'Ashray' program, which provides climate-controlled rest areas for delivery partners, to 250 centers by the end of December.

Balancing Growth and Financials

For investors, the scale of this operation highlights the significant resources required to compete in the Indian e-commerce sector. The Indian marketplace entity, Amazon Seller Services, recently reported an operating revenue of ₹34,966.8 crore for the 2026 financial year, representing a 15% increase compared to the previous year. However, the company continues to operate at a net loss, which stood at ₹389.9 crore for the same period.

While revenue is growing, the financial results demonstrate the ongoing challenge of achieving profitability while making heavy investments in logistics, technology, and workforce. The ability to manage these costs during high-traffic periods is a key metric for long-term sustainability.

Navigating Global and Regulatory Risks

While Amazon India focuses on local festive demand, investors are also monitoring the parent company's performance on the global stage. Amazon's global stock (AMZN) has faced pressure recently, trading near $259.77 as of August 31, 2026. This sentiment is partly tied to potential legal challenges, including a reported lawsuit by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) concerning advertising practices.

In India, the e-commerce sector remains highly competitive. The company faces pressure to maintain its market share against both established rivals and emerging quick-commerce players. The success of this seasonal hiring drive will be measured by how effectively the company handles the delivery surge without incurring excessive costs or service delays.

Investors will continue to watch for updates on how the company manages its path toward profitability, especially as it balances the high cost of maintaining a massive logistics network with the competitive pricing strategies needed to drive volume in the Indian market.
