ABFRL Shares Fall 5-8% After Q1 Loss Widens to ₹249 Crore

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) reported an 11% revenue increase in Q1 FY27, yet its net loss widened to ₹249 crore. Heavy spending on new brands and store expansion weighed on margins. Following the results, the stock declined by 5-8%, and brokerage Motilal Oswal maintained a 'Neutral' rating on the company.

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) reported a mixed financial performance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, which triggered a 5-8% decline in its share price. While the company saw its revenue grow by 11% year-over-year to ₹2,026 crore, its profitability remained under pressure, with the consolidated net loss widening to ₹249 crore compared to ₹234 crore in the same period last year.

The revenue growth was supported by strong performance in key segments. The luxury segment led the way with a 30% surge, while Pantaloons and the TMRW platform recorded growth of 10% and 11%, respectively. Despite these top-line gains, the company’s bottom line was impacted by higher operating expenses, finance costs, and depreciation charges.

Impact of Strategic Expansion

The pressure on profitability stems largely from ABFRL’s aggressive investment strategy. The company has been spending heavily to grow its new ventures, including the TMRW platform, and to build presence for brands like OWND, TASVA, and its international partnership with Galeries Lafayette. Furthermore, the company expanded its physical footprint significantly by adding more than 45 new stores during the quarter. While these initiatives are aimed at capturing future market share, they require substantial upfront capital, which has led to higher operational costs and immediate pressure on profit margins.

In the ethnic wear segment, growth remained relatively muted at 4%, which the company noted was due to a shorter wedding season affecting overall sales. Investors are currently weighing the company's ability to balance this rapid expansion against the need to improve cash flow and reduce financial strain.

Brokerage and Market Outlook

Following the announcement of these results, brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has maintained its 'Neutral' rating on the stock with a target price of ₹60. The brokerage’s analysis, based on a sum-of-the-parts valuation, highlights that while segments like Pantaloons and the designer-led ethnic portfolio show promise, the overall financial health remains sensitive to the heavy spending required for new business formats.

The primary concern for shareholders is the ongoing impact of these investments on the company's net losses. Moving forward, market participants will likely monitor whether ABFRL can successfully scale these new brands to the point where they contribute positively to profitability. Key factors to track in the coming quarters include the execution of store rollouts, the ability to control operational costs, and whether consumer demand recovers enough to offset the current margin pressure.
