During the quarter ending September 2025, Coal India experienced a setback, with production dropping 4% year-on-year to 145.8 million tonnes and off-take decreasing by 1% to 166 million tonnes. These figures fell below management targets, primarily due to weak demand for power. Realization prices remained subdued, with eAuction prices falling 6.6% to Rs 2,292 per tonne, though Fuel Supply Agreement (FSA) prices saw a slight 0.8% increase to Rs 1,478 per tonne. The moderation in global coal prices also contributed to domestic pressure. Consequently, consolidated revenue declined by over 3%.
Profitability took a hit as EBITDA contracted by 22.1% year-on-year, shrinking the operating margin to 22% from 28% in the previous year and 35% in the prior quarter. Despite cost control measures, increased other expenses offset savings from employee costs. The company is projected to miss its annual production target for fiscal year 2026.
Impact: This news is crucial for investors as it highlights operational challenges and potential earnings headwinds for a major public sector undertaking like Coal India. The decline in production, off-take, and margins directly impacts profitability and shareholder returns. However, the declared interim dividend provides some comfort, and the strategic diversification into critical minerals and renewable energy offers a potential long-term growth avenue. The market will watch how effectively Coal India executes these diversification plans to mitigate risks and drive future growth. Impact Rating: 7/10
