Vedanta Secures 152-Hectare Punnam Manganese Block in AP

Vedanta Limited has been declared the successful bidder for the 152-hectare Punnam manganese block in Andhra Pradesh. The acquisition aims to boost domestic mineral production and reduce import reliance. While the company recently reported strong quarterly profits, investors should note the project is in an early exploration stage and faces potential land acquisition and geological risks.

Vedanta Limited has been formally declared the successful bidder for the 152-hectare Punnam Manganese Block in Andhra Pradesh. The company received official notification of this status on August 13, 2026, following the successful completion of required statutory compliances. This development marks the formal acquisition of the site after Vedanta had previously emerged as the preferred bidder in an e-auction conducted by the state government.

This strategic addition to the company’s metals and mining portfolio is designed to increase local resource availability. By focusing on domestic manganese extraction, Vedanta aims to align with broader industry goals to decrease reliance on imported industrial materials, which can be sensitive to global supply chain disruptions.

While this expansion signals long-term intent, investors should be aware of the project's current status. The Punnam block is at the G4 exploration stage. In mining terms, this is an early stage, meaning the actual size and commercial viability of the mineral deposits are not yet fully proven. The project will require extensive geological surveys, drilling, and data analysis to confirm if it can be turned into a productive asset. Additionally, mining activities in such regions often face hurdles related to land acquisition, especially when dealing with private patta land, which necessitates landowner consent and compensation processes.

The update follows Vedanta’s recent first-quarter financial results for the 2027 fiscal year. The company posted a profit after tax of ₹5,294 crore, with revenue from continuing operations reaching ₹23,456 crore. The company has highlighted improvements in operational efficiency, which helped expand profit margins during the period.

On August 14, 2026, shares of Vedanta were trading at approximately ₹267.90 on the National Stock Exchange, reflecting a decline of about 1.18% for the day. While the company has shown operational growth, the stock has faced downward pressure year-to-date, mirroring broader volatility in the commodity and mining sectors and reflecting changing investor sentiment toward the company's post-demerger restructuring.

Moving forward, the primary monitorables for investors will be the company’s ability to secure necessary regulatory clearances and its progress in the exploration phase. Shareholders may also watch for management updates regarding how this block fits into the company’s overall capital allocation strategy, particularly as the business continues to navigate the complexities of commodity price volatility and internal restructuring.
