The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil trade passes, is experiencing significant shipping disruptions. On Sunday, vessel traffic dropped to just four crossings, a notable decline from eight the previous day, as regional tensions between the United States and Iran intensified.
Impact on Energy Logistics and Storage
The most immediate effect of these navigational challenges is visible in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector. Transits for LNG tankers have nearly stopped since last Thursday. While production facilities in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates continue to operate, the inability to move these supplies through the strait has forced a buildup of inventory within the Gulf. As of mid-July, seven Qatari carriers are estimated to be holding 0.57 million metric tons of LNG. Currently, about 1.9 million tons of LNG tanker capacity is stationed inside the Gulf, representing roughly eight days of normal export volume.
This accumulation of floating storage suggests that while supply remains available at the source, the delivery pipeline is effectively clogged. If the current maritime restrictions persist, it could lead to tighter energy supply conditions in importing regions. Conversely, the concentration of these tankers means that if the waterway reopens, there is significant capacity ready to normalize exports quickly.

The reduction in traffic follows reports of ongoing conflict, including recent U.S. naval operations and claims by Iranian authorities regarding the interception of vessels. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency has also noted incidents near Oman, adding to the uncertainty for commercial shipping operators. For investors, the situation introduces a complex layer of risk regarding energy commodity prices, insurance premiums for shipping, and potential supply chain bottlenecks.
The volatility in this region historically influences global oil and gas price benchmarks. While crude carriers and product tankers have continued to enter the strait to load supplies since Friday, the overall environment remains fragile.
