Silver prices have maintained their 'safe-haven appeal' even after consolidating from recent highs. On November 10, the price hovered around Rs 1,49,540 per kilogram on MCX, marking a 1.23 percent increase from the previous day. Samit Guha, Managing Director and CEO of MMTC-PAMP, highlighted silver's unique 'dual use' – it serves as both an investment asset and is crucial for industrial applications, unlike gold which is primarily a store of value. Approximately 60 percent of global silver demand stems from industrial sectors, including solar panels, electric vehicle batteries, semiconductors, LEDs, and medical devices, due to its superior conductivity. An Augmont Bullion report indicated that silver prices have broken above the $4,050 (approximately Rs 1,50,000/kg) consolidation range, supported by a weaker US dollar and concerns over the US government shutdown, which bolstered demand for safe-haven assets.
For investment, experts like Samit Guha recommend allocating 15 percent to gold and 5-10 percent to silver as a tactical move to capitalize on industrial demand cycles, depending on individual risk appetite. Factors like supply and demand, the US dollar, and interest rates influence silver prices. Many Indian consumers view silver as a safe-haven, with 70 percent purchasing minted silver products and Silver ETF investments rising above 50 percent. High-purity (999.9+) minted coins and bars are also preferred.
Impact This news can positively impact commodity investors, precious metal funds, and potentially companies involved in industrial sectors that heavily rely on silver, such as electronics and renewable energy. For Indian investors, it reinforces silver's role in diversification and wealth preservation strategies, especially in volatile economic times. Rating: 6/10.
