Power trading firm PTC India has approved a ₹65 crore investment to form a subsidiary for a national mineral exchange. The move aligns with the Indian Bureau of Mines' digitalization initiative. While the investment amount is small relative to the company's total size, success will depend on regulatory clearances and the firm’s ability to build liquidity in a new commodity category.
PTC India, known for its role as a leading intermediary in the power trading market, is expanding its business into the commodities sector. The company's board has approved the creation of a wholly-owned subsidiary tasked with developing and operating a national mineral exchange. This project is backed by an initial capital commitment of up to ₹65 crore, which will be invested in phases. The first stage will involve a ₹10 crore subscription for shares, signaling the company's intent to test the market before committing the full amount.
The venture is a direct response to the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) push to modernize how minerals are traded in India. The government body has been encouraging the creation of digital platforms to formalize mineral trade, aiming for better transparency and price discovery. PTC India, which currently manages power flow between generators and distributors, plans to apply its experience as a platform provider to the mineral sector. By designing a system for electronic, delivery-based trading, the company hopes to capture a share of this transitioning market.
From a financial perspective, the ₹65 crore outlay is relatively small when compared to the company's overall market scale, which means the project is unlikely to strain the firm's balance sheet even if it takes time to turn profitable. However, the business of running an exchange is complex. Success in this area relies on achieving high trading volumes, which requires attracting both buyers and sellers to the platform. Unlike its established power trading business, where PTC India has strong existing relationships, the mineral exchange will require the company to build an entirely new network of market participants.
There are also regulatory steps the company must clear to move forward. The Indian Bureau of Mines has set a deadline of November 2, 2026, for registrations. PTC India is currently in the process of seeking an extension to this date to ensure it meets all formal requirements. The company will only be able to launch the exchange after it receives a formal Certificate of Registration from the central government.
Investors may monitor the progress of this subsidiary by tracking the timeline for regulatory approvals and the company's strategy for acquiring users for the new platform. The key monitorable will be whether the company can secure the necessary permits and effectively scale the exchange to compete in a sector that is still in the early stages of digital formalization.
