NMDC Sets New Iron Ore Prices at ₹5,250 for Lump, ₹4,500 for Fines

NMDC has revised iron ore prices effective August 8, 2026, setting Lump Ore at ₹5,250 per tonne and Fines at ₹4,500 per tonne. While July production reached a robust 4.06 million tonnes, investors are watching how pricing adjustments and statutory levies impact future profit margins.

NMDC Limited has officially updated its iron ore pricing structure, with the new rates becoming effective on August 8, 2026. The state-owned mining company has pegged its 65.5% grade Lump Ore (10-40mm) at ₹5,250 per tonne, while 64% grade Fines (below 10mm) are set at ₹4,500 per tonne.

These rates are quoted on a Free On Rail (FOR) basis. For investors and industry observers, it is important to understand that these figures represent the base price charged by the company. They do not include various statutory levies, which include royalty, District Mineral Foundation (DMF) funds, National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMEDT) payments, cess, forest permit fees, transit fees, and Goods and Services Tax (GST). Because these additional costs must be paid by the buyer, the final delivered price for steel producers can be significantly higher than the base rate.

The pricing decision comes alongside strong operational data. NMDC reported that its iron ore production for July 2026 hit 4.06 million tonnes, a substantial increase compared to the 3.09 million tonnes produced in July 2025. Cumulative production for the year to date has also shown healthy growth, reaching 19.16 million tonnes compared to 15.09 million tonnes in the same period last year. This increase in volume suggests that the company is maintaining steady execution on the ground despite market fluctuations.

From an investor perspective, profitability in the mining sector is highly sensitive to price realizations and operational costs. While higher production volumes are a positive indicator of capacity utilization, the company's profit margins remain dependent on its ability to pass on or absorb varying statutory levies and mining overheads. Furthermore, the steel industry—NMDC's primary customer base—often faces demand cycles that can influence how much pricing power the miner holds.

In recent market activity, NMDC shares have seen some pressure, recently trading at ₹85.24. The stock has experienced a modest 1% gain over the last six months and is currently trading below its 52-week high of ₹97.49. Market observers will be looking to see if the current production growth translates into improved financial performance in the coming quarters.

Investors may track upcoming data on domestic steel demand, as this typically dictates whether NMDC can maintain these price levels in future revisions. Additionally, the impact of statutory levies on the landed cost of iron ore for downstream steel manufacturers will remain an important factor to monitor for any potential pressure on volume demand.
