Motilal Oswal Retains Buy on NMDC, Sets Rs 98 Target

Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'Buy' rating on NMDC with a target price of ₹98, citing strong domestic demand and financial stability. This optimism comes despite a recent ₹200 per ton price cut for iron ore. Investors are now tracking the company's upcoming board meeting on August 14, 2026, for further strategic updates.

Motilal Oswal has kept a positive stance on NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, issuing a 'Buy' recommendation with a price target of ₹98. As of August 10, 2026, the company's shares were trading in the range of ₹85 to ₹86. The brokerage firm believes the company is well-placed to support India's growing steel production needs, which could help it maintain steady performance despite volatility in global commodity prices.

The brokerage's outlook is supported by the company’s solid financial position. For the financial year ending March 2026, NMDC reported a consolidated net profit of ₹7,414.69 crore and revenue of ₹32,070.89 crore. Furthermore, the company held a net cash balance of approximately ₹55 billion as of the end of FY26. This strong liquidity is expected to help the company fund its capital spending projects, such as Deposit-4 and Deposit-13, without needing to take on heavy debt.

However, the company faces near-term challenges. On August 8, 2026, NMDC announced a reduction in the prices of both lump ore and fines by ₹200 per ton. This price cut reflects the ongoing sensitivity of the mining sector to shifting market demand and pricing trends. For investors, it is important to note that profitability can be influenced by fluctuations in global iron ore prices, which often impact export realizations.

Additional business risks include the potential for regulatory policy changes, specifically regarding mining leases, and the pressure on profit margins from rising input costs like diesel and explosives. Furthermore, as with any large mining project, there is the inherent risk of delays in executing expansion plans, which investors typically track closely.

The company has scheduled a board meeting for August 14, 2026. Management is expected to evaluate future profit and demand trends during this session. Shareholders and market observers will be watching this meeting for any guidance on how the company plans to balance its volume growth with the current pricing pressures.
