Mirae Asset Sees Gold Targeting $4,535 on Lower Yields

Mirae Asset Sharekhan expects gold prices to climb toward $4,535 as cooling US bond yields and lower oil prices help the metal recover from its recent rate-hike sell-off. Investors are now watching US economic data and energy costs as key drivers for near-term momentum.

Gold is witnessing a recovery after the US Federal Reserve's recent interest rate hike, which initially pushed prices down. Mirae Asset Sharekhan expects the precious metal to test the $4,535 resistance level if US Treasury yields continue to move lower. The metal saw a 2.2% bounce back after an earlier 3% decline, as investors adjusted their expectations following the central bank's policy update.

Understanding the Gold-Yield Link

The price of gold is closely tied to interest rates and bond yields. Since gold does not pay interest, it becomes less attractive to investors when government bond yields are high. Conversely, when bond yields soften, holding gold becomes relatively more appealing. The brokerage noted that the recent easing in US Treasury yields has been a key factor behind this recovery. Furthermore, the US dollar, which often moves in the opposite direction of gold, has retreated, offering additional support to the metal.

Crude Oil and Inflation Risks

Movements in crude oil prices also influence gold's outlook. Lower energy costs generally help soothe inflation concerns, which can reduce the pressure on central banks to keep interest rates elevated. However, Mirae Asset Sharekhan warned that if crude oil prices rise again, it could spark new inflation fears. This could force bond yields upward once more, potentially capping or reversing the recovery in gold prices. Geopolitical tensions in energy markets remain a critical factor to watch.

Important Levels to Track

Investors are focusing on specific price zones for gold. While the $4,535 mark is seen as a key resistance point, the brokerage highlighted the $4,200 to $4,220 range as a critical support level. If market sentiment turns negative again, this support zone may be tested. For Indian investors, global trends remain significant because international price changes directly influence the cost of gold imports, which ultimately affects domestic jewellery and investment prices. The near-term trend for gold will likely be dictated by upcoming US economic data, central bank commentary, and movements in the energy sector.
