India's coal imports surged by 13.54% to 22.05 million tonnes in September, primarily due to increased demand ahead of the festive season and restocking by steel mills. Non-coking coal imports rose slightly, while coking coal, crucial for the steel sector, saw a significant jump. Despite government efforts to boost domestic production and reduce import dependence, India continues to rely on imports for specific coal grades. Experts anticipate continued demand for metallurgical and industrial coal.
