India Steel Output Climbs 5.6% as Global Production Stagnates

India’s crude steel production surged 5.6% to 130 million tonnes in the first nine months of 2026, defying a global downward trend. While world output contracted by 0.7%, domestic production remained resilient.

Resilience in Domestic Steel Output

India continues to solidify its position as the second-largest steel producer globally, posting a 5.6% rise in crude steel production to 130 million tonnes for the January-September 2026 period. This growth stands in stark contrast to the broader market, where global output dipped by 0.7% to 1.368 billion tonnes. The data, provided by the World Steel Association, highlights a divergence between Indian industrial capacity and tightening conditions in major markets like the European Union and China.

Regional Performance Metrics

In September alone, India produced 13.9 million tonnes of crude steel, marking a 1.9% increase compared to the same month last year. While Asia and Oceania combined saw a marginal 0.7% growth for September, the region's cumulative output for the first nine months fell by 0.9% to 1.01 billion tonnes. China, the dominant force in global steel, reported a cumulative decline of 2.9% to 724.8 million tonnes through September, despite a slight uptick in September volumes.

Contrasting Global Trends

The landscape remains fragmented across geographies. The United States reported a robust 5.8% increase in output over the nine-month period, reaching 64.9 million tonnes. Conversely, the European Union saw production contract by 5% in September to 10.1 million tonnes. Significant volatility was observed in the Middle East, where production dropped by 20.4% in September, while African production demonstrated strong momentum with a 10.6% monthly rise. These figures underscore the uneven recovery path for the global heavy industrial sector as supply chains continue to adjust to regional demand fluctuations and geopolitical pressures.
