India Jewellery Exports Rise 12.5% Driven by Studded Gold

India's gem and jewellery exports increased by 12.52% in August 2026 to ₹21,945.87 crore, largely due to a 64.96% jump in studded gold jewellery demand. The sector is pivoting toward design-led, high-value manufacturing to combat price pressures in traditional diamond exports. Investors should monitor how trade agreements like the India-UK FTA and raw material costs influence future profitability.

India’s gem and jewellery sector reported a 12.52% year-on-year growth in gross exports for August 2026, reaching a total value of ₹21,945.87 crore. This performance highlights a structural shift in the industry as manufacturers move away from simple processing and toward high-value, design-led production. The primary catalyst for this growth was the studded gold jewellery segment, which saw a significant 64.96% surge in exports, reaching $642.85 million for the month.

This trend toward studded gold jewellery represents a tactical pivot for the industry. By focusing on products that require more design expertise and craftsmanship, exporters are attempting to insulate themselves from the low-margin volatility often associated with the traditional processing of plain gold jewellery. This evolution is seen as a move to establish India as a global hub for sophisticated, value-added jewellery.

Diamond Segment Dynamics

The diamond segment, a significant component of India's export basket, presents a complex picture for market observers. While the export volume for cut and polished diamonds increased to 13.36 lakh carats in August from 12.94 lakh carats in the same period last year, the total value realization remains under pressure. This volume growth suggests that while there is still demand for the physical commodity in international markets, the pricing power remains weak. For investors, this creates a situation where companies may move more goods by weight, but profitability will depend heavily on their ability to manage costs amidst this price-based pressure.

Sector Challenges and Outlook

Despite the positive export figures, the industry faces several headwinds. Global economic volatility and geopolitical tensions, particularly in regions like West Asia, continue to create uncertainty for trade flows. Furthermore, fluctuating global gold prices impact raw material costs directly. When gold prices rise, it often increases the working capital requirements for exporters and can affect their competitiveness in international markets.

Additionally, exporters are managing potential regulatory hurdles and tariff-related uncertainties in key consumer markets, such as the United States. Retail margins in Western markets are also under pressure due to shifting consumer demand and economic conditions. Looking ahead, industry participants are closely watching the impact of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. This deal is expected to provide zero-duty access to a major $4 billion market, which could serve as a significant growth driver for the studded gold jewellery segment in the coming quarters. The primary monitorables for the sector will be the sustainability of the studded jewellery demand, the evolution of diamond pricing, and the speed at which trade agreements can translate into actual export volume.
