India Gold Demand Up 20-30% in Q3; ETF Inflows at 7-Month High

Retail gold demand in India rose 20-30% in the July-September 2026 quarter, driven by a strong wedding season. While jewelry shoppers are moving toward lightweight designs and old-gold exchanges, institutional interest has surged, with Gold ETFs seeing net inflows of Rs 44.5 billion in September.

Retail gold jewelry demand in India maintained strong momentum during the July-September 2026 quarter, with major retailers reporting revenue growth of 20% to 30% compared to the same period last year. This performance exceeded early market expectations, which were tempered by concerns over the timing of the festive calendar. The growth was supported by aggressive network expansion, as prominent jewelry chains opened 42 new outlets during the three-month period. Same-store sales, which track revenue from established shops, grew by nearly 20%, showing that consumer appetite for gold jewelry remained strong across both new and existing locations.

To adapt to high gold prices, consumers and retailers have shifted their strategies. Buyers are increasingly opting for lightweight and wearable jewelry designs that offer lower total costs. Furthermore, old-gold exchange schemes have become a central part of the retail model. Many jewelers report that these exchanges now account for more than 50% of total sales, reflecting a 10% increase from previous cycles. This trend allows consumers to trade their existing jewelry for new pieces without needing large amounts of extra cash, while providing retailers with a steady, domestic source of bullion.

The investment segment also saw notable activity in September. Data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India shows that Gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) recorded net inflows of Rs 44.5 billion, the highest level in seven months. This influx, which added approximately 3 tonnes of gold to total holdings, indicates that many investors viewed the recent price correction as an entry point. During September alone, approximately 140,000 new investor folios were opened, suggesting that gold is increasingly being used by a broader range of investors as a long-term hedge against economic uncertainty.

However, investors should monitor potential risks as the sector moves forward. While revenue growth has been robust, high gold prices can put pressure on volume growth if consumers decide to reduce the quantity of gold they buy. Additionally, the retail jewelry business is highly dependent on the wedding and festive seasons. Any shift in consumer sentiment or broader economic pressure on household spending could affect future demand. The key monitorable for the coming quarters will be whether retailers can maintain this high level of revenue growth if gold prices remain volatile or if inflationary pressures reduce the average ticket size per customer.
