Hindustan Zinc to Build 10 MTPA Waste Recycling Plant

Hindustan Zinc is launching a 10-million-tonne-per-annum tailings recycling facility to recover zinc and germanium. The company has also lowered its cost of production guidance to $825-$850 per tonne. Investors may monitor how the firm manages its long-term capacity expansion from 18 mtpa to 35 mtpa against the challenge of declining ore grades.

Hindustan Zinc is launching a significant project to transform mining waste into revenue by constructing a 10-million-tonne-per-annum (mtpa) tailings recycling facility. This infrastructure will focus on reclaiming zinc and critical minerals like germanium from accumulated waste stockpiles. By moving past the initial design phase, the company aims to modernize its extraction process, transitioning from traditional mining methods to a circular model that derives value from what was previously considered waste.

Focusing on Cost Efficiency

The management, led by CEO Amarendu Prakash, has updated its financial outlook for the current fiscal year by lowering the cost of production (COP) guidance for zinc. The target has been revised to a range of $825 to $850 per tonne, an improvement from the previous expectation of $1,000 per tonne. This cost-saving initiative is critical for maintaining margins, as the company is currently navigating the impact of declining ore grades at its traditional mining sites. Managing these costs effectively is essential to sustaining profitability while the company funds its expansion efforts.

Capacity Expansion and Silver Strategy

Beyond the recycling facility, the company is continuing to prioritize silver, with an annual production target of 680 tonnes. Having already produced over 320 tonnes in the first half of the year, Hindustan Zinc is looking to capitalize on a persistent global supply deficit for the metal. This aligns with the company's long-term plan to increase its total mining throughput from 18 mtpa to 35 mtpa over the next two to five years.

Strategic Monitorables

For investors, the success of this strategy hinges on two main factors: execution and market conditions. While the global zinc market is projected to face a deficit of 180,000 tonnes by 2026, which may support pricing, the company faces inherent risks related to project implementation and the quality of raw materials. Expanding mining throughput while managing the costs associated with declining ore grades remains a key operational challenge. Stakeholders may watch for updates on the project's timeline and commissioning date, as well as the company’s ability to maintain these lower production costs in the coming quarters.
