Hindustan Zinc Profit Doubles to ₹5,469 Crore in June Quarter

Hindustan Zinc reported a net profit of ₹5,469 crore for the June quarter, more than doubling from the previous year. The results were driven by high metal prices, record output, and improved operational efficiency. Investors are now looking at the upcoming leadership transition in August.

Detailed Coverage

Hindustan Zinc, a major producer of zinc and silver in India, has posted a strong start to the new financial year. The company reported a consolidated net profit of ₹5,469 crore for the June quarter, a significant jump compared to ₹2,234 crore in the same period last year. This performance beat market expectations, aided by higher metal prices and a weaker rupee, which typically helps exporters.

Operational Efficiency and Production Records

Revenue from operations for the quarter stood at a record ₹13,747 crore, marking a 77% increase from the year-ago period. This growth was supported by the company’s highest-ever first-quarter mined metal production of 268,000 tonnes. The company noted that this is the fifth year in a row it has set a production record for the June quarter. Beyond volume, the company also reported that its cost of producing zinc fell to $851 per tonne, excluding royalty, the lowest level since the firm transitioned to underground mining operations.

EBITDA, a key measure of operating profit, reached an all-time high of ₹8,074 crore, with margins expanding to 59%. Silver, a major part of the company's product mix, contributed roughly 46% to the total profitability. The company ended the quarter with a healthy net cash position of ₹5,572 crore, allowing it to pay an interim dividend of ₹11 per share while continuing its capital spending plans.

Upcoming Leadership Changes

Beyond the financials, the company is preparing for significant management shifts. Amarendu Prakash, formerly the head of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL), is scheduled to take over as the CEO of Hindustan Zinc on August 1. He will succeed Arun Misra, who is moving to a leadership role within the Vedanta Group. Additionally, Amit Gupta has taken charge as the Chief Financial Officer as of June 1.

Strategic Outlook and Monitorables

Looking ahead, the company has maintained its annual guidance of producing 1.1 million tonnes of mined metal. Investors are likely to track the progress of its planned long-term capital projects, which include a new integrated zinc smelter and a phosphoric acid plant. A proposed large-scale zinc and lead smelter is currently awaiting formal board approval. While the company is currently benefiting from favorable global metal prices, future profitability will depend on the sustainability of these price levels and the company's ability to maintain its current production efficiency as it pursues its expansion strategy.
