Gold Steady at Rs 140,819; Fed Policy Focus Caps Gains

Gold trades steady at Rs 140,819 per 10 grams as investors await US Federal Reserve policy updates. A stronger dollar and high energy costs are creating pressure on bullion, leaving traders in a cautious holding pattern ahead of potential interest rate adjustments.

Precious metals are trading within a narrow range as market participants remain cautious ahead of critical policy announcements from the US Federal Reserve. In the Indian markets, MCX spot gold settled at Rs 140,819 per 10 grams, while silver held at Rs 192,193 per kilogram. Global gold spot prices are currently hovering near $4,047 per ounce, as investors weigh how upcoming central bank decisions will affect the broader economic landscape.

The current price stagnation is largely linked to the strength of the US dollar. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, is trading at 101.82. Gold is traditionally seen as a non-yielding asset, meaning it does not pay interest or dividends. When the US dollar strengthens, gold becomes more expensive for international buyers, which typically reduces demand. The market is closely watching for any forward guidance from Federal Reserve officials, as expectations of persistent interest rates are currently creating a headwind for bullion.

Adding to this complexity are elevated energy costs. Brent crude futures are currently trading near $115.73 per barrel. Higher energy prices often feed into broader inflation figures, which in turn complicate the Federal Reserve's ability to lower interest rates. This dynamic creates a challenging environment for gold, as investors try to balance the metal's traditional safe-haven status against the pressure caused by a higher-for-longer interest rate environment.

For investors, the immediate outlook remains uncertain. Until there is more clarity regarding the Federal Reserve's path for interest rates through the end of the year, market activity is likely to remain muted. The key monitorable for the coming sessions will be official policy announcements and any commentary from central bank officials regarding inflation and economic growth, as these factors will dictate the next major move for precious metals.
