Gold Slides Under $4,010 as US Rate Hike Expectations Rise

Gold prices fell below $4,010 per ounce on Monday as expectations of higher US interest rates outweighed geopolitical safe-haven demand. While investors historically favor gold during times of tension, rising crude oil prices and the prospect of central bank policy tightening have pressured the metal.

Gold prices continued their downward trend on Monday, trading below the $4,010 per ounce level. The precious metal, which often gains during periods of geopolitical uncertainty, is currently struggling to maintain its value as investor attention shifts toward the possibility of further interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve.

Impact of Energy Costs on Gold

The current price pressure on gold is linked closely to energy markets. Brent crude prices have risen above $90 a barrel, a development largely driven by escalating tensions between the US and Iran. When oil prices remain high, they often act as a driver for inflation. This environment complicates the outlook for central banks, which may be forced to keep interest rates higher for longer to bring inflation under control. Because gold does not pay interest or dividends, it becomes less attractive to investors when government bond yields and interest rates are rising.

Gold saw a decline of approximately 0.4% during Monday's session, settling near $4,000.55 per ounce. This follows a difficult week where the metal recorded a 2.5% loss, its sharpest weekly decline in two weeks. COMEX gold futures for August delivery also showed a similar downward trend, easing 0.33% to $4,005.70 per ounce.

Divergence in the Precious Metals Market

While gold struggled, silver displayed a different trend on Monday. COMEX silver futures rose by 0.70% to $56.72 per ounce. This movement appears to be a technical recovery following a significant correction the previous week, during which silver prices fell more than 6%. Investors should note that this gain does not necessarily signal a long-term trend reversal, but rather reflects opportunistic buying after a period of sharp price drops.

What Investors Should Track

The immediate future for precious metals will likely be dictated by upcoming global economic reports. Investors are focused on US economic data, including weekly jobless claims and flash purchasing managers' index (PMI) figures. These reports are expected to provide more clarity on the health of the US economy and its impact on inflation. Additionally, economic data releases from Europe and China will be closely watched, as they influence global sentiment toward commodities and interest rate policies.

Market volatility is expected to persist as participants balance the competing forces of geopolitical risk in West Asia and the potential for tighter monetary policy. Future price movements for gold will remain highly sensitive to any official communication from the Federal Reserve and further developments regarding energy supply constraints.
