Gold prices have edged up to approximately $4,158 per ounce after weak US jobs data cooled expectations for a Federal Reserve interest rate hike in October. This shift reduces the pressure of high interest rates on non-yielding assets, supporting the metal. Indian investors are tracking these global cues, as they significantly influence domestic gold price trends.
Gold prices have moved higher to the $4,153–$4,158 per ounce range as market sentiment shifts regarding the US Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy. The primary driver for this move is a cooling US labor market, which has sharply reduced market expectations for an interest rate hike in October.
The change in outlook follows the release of US nonfarm payrolls data for September, which showed only 29,000 new jobs added. This figure fell significantly short of market expectations, suggesting that the economy may be slowing down faster than anticipated. When the economy shows signs of weakness, the pressure on the central bank to maintain high interest rates often eases. Since gold is a non-interest-bearing asset, it usually faces pressure when rates are high because investors prefer interest-paying investments like government bonds. When the probability of further rate hikes declines, gold becomes a more attractive option for many.
Market expectations for an October interest rate increase have dropped to roughly 20-22%, down from over 60% just one week ago. This rapid repricing has created a favorable environment for precious metals. A softer US dollar, which often accompanies a less aggressive central bank, also makes gold cheaper for buyers holding other currencies, providing an additional layer of support for demand.
However, the outlook for gold is not without risks. While the current data supports prices, the metal continues to face structural pressure from elevated US Treasury yields. Furthermore, rising oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions pose a threat by potentially keeping inflation higher than desired. If inflation remains sticky, the Federal Reserve may be forced to keep interest rates elevated for a longer period, which could limit gains for gold.
Moving forward, global market participants will be watching for incoming inflation prints and any official commentary from the Federal Reserve. For Indian investors, global spot prices act as a key benchmark for local valuations. Additionally, changes in the value of the Indian rupee against the US dollar will play a major role in determining how these global price movements translate into local market prices.
