Gold Prices Steady Near Rs 148,000 As Global Cues Stabilize

Gold is trading around Rs 148,000 per 10 grams as investors await US Federal Reserve signals and inflation data. While prices have retreated from September highs, strong global demand from central banks and ETFs continues to support the market. The price movement remains tied to the balance between US Treasury yields and concerns over long-term debt sustainability.

Gold prices are currently navigating a consolidation phase in the Indian market, trading around Rs 148,000 per 10 grams. This follows a notable pullback from the record peaks of Rs 165,000 seen in September. The precious metal is currently testing its short-term range, with investors shifting their focus toward upcoming US economic data for clues on the next price direction.

A key trend currently shaping the gold market is the change in how the metal reacts to US Treasury yields. Typically, rising yields pressure gold prices by making non-yielding assets less attractive. However, in the current environment, investors appear to be interpreting higher US yields as a reaction to rising fiscal deficits and concerns over long-term debt sustainability, rather than just economic strength. This shift has helped gold maintain its value even as borrowing costs remain elevated.

From a technical perspective, the market is watching the Rs 145,500 to Rs 146,000 range, which serves as a critical support level. If prices drop below this zone, further weakness could follow. On the upside, the Rs 150,500 level acts as a significant barrier. Clearing this psychological threshold would be needed to signal a return to stronger bullish momentum, potentially targeting higher levels.

Structural support for bullion remains firm, driven primarily by institutional activity. Global gold ETF holdings saw an increase of 187 tonnes between August and September, indicating that large investors are maintaining their positions despite the price volatility. Furthermore, central banks globally continue to purchase an estimated 250 to 300 tonnes per quarter, providing a reliable floor for prices amidst broader market uncertainty.

The immediate focus for investors will be the upcoming US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation reports and updates from the Federal Reserve. While the probability of an October rate hike appears low, with market estimates tracking below 20%, any data indicating persistent inflation could introduce new headwinds. Investors may monitor these indicators closely, as they will likely dictate whether gold resumes its upward trend or continues its current range-bound movement.
