Gold Prices Hold Near Rs 1.5 Lakh Amid Market Tug-of-War

Gold prices are consolidating around Rs 150,980 per 10 grams as investors balance high US Treasury yields against strong safe-haven demand. With the precious metal caught between opposing economic forces, market focus remains on central bank activity and upcoming Federal Reserve communication.

Gold prices in India are currently hovering near the Rs 150,980 mark per 10 grams, reflecting a period of consolidation as the precious metal battles conflicting market signals. Internationally, spot gold is trading above $4,200 per ounce. The market is witnessing a tug-of-war between two dominant forces: rising U.S. Treasury yields, which generally pressure non-interest-bearing assets like gold, and persistent safe-haven demand driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The Battle Between Yields and Safety

High Treasury yields act as a headwind for gold. When yields are attractive, they increase the opportunity cost of holding an asset that does not pay regular interest, leading some investors to favor bonds or cash. However, this downward pressure is being countered by significant institutional buying. Gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen their highest inflows in four years, suggesting that institutional investors are using gold as a hedge against concerns over long-term fiscal deficits and currency debasement. Central banks, including the People’s Bank of China, have also continued to add to their reserves, providing a structural floor for the price.

Technical Levels to Track

From a technical perspective, the market is currently caught in a range. Immediate resistance is identified near the Rs 155,000 level locally, and between $4,228 and $4,293 in the international market. A sustained break above these levels would be required to signal a return to the previous upward trend. Conversely, support is seen in the Rs 149,000 to Rs 150,000 range. If the metal fails to hold this floor, it could see further downward movement toward lower support zones.

Risks and Market Headwinds

Investors are monitoring several key risks that could shift this balance. The most immediate concern is the trajectory of U.S. monetary policy. Any hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve—such as indications that interest rates will stay high for longer—could add pressure on bullion prices. Additionally, currency volatility plays a critical role for Indian investors. Fluctuations in the USD-INR exchange rate directly impact local prices, sometimes creating a divergence from international trends. Finally, any unexpected easing in geopolitical tensions could reduce the urgency of safe-haven buying, potentially affecting demand.

As the week progresses, the primary monitorables for the market include official Federal Reserve communications and fresh economic data. These updates will likely determine whether gold can break out of its current range or if it will remain under pressure from higher interest rates.
