Gold Prices Hit Record ₹1,50,300 per 10 Grams

Gold prices in India reached a new peak of ₹1,50,300 per 10 grams, rising by ₹400. This increase is driven by high festive demand as India prepares for Dussehra and Diwali. While gold prices rose, silver remained steady at ₹2,15,000 per kilogram.

Gold prices in the Indian market reached a fresh high of ₹1,50,300 per 10 grams on Monday. This represents a daily increase of ₹400, reflecting the intense retail activity that typically precedes the Indian festive season. With Dussehra and Diwali approaching, consumer buying has surged, pushing physical gold to trade at a premium for the first time in several months.

Impact of Festive Retail Demand

The primary driver for the current price movement is the seasonal wedding and festival demand within India. Unlike investment-focused demand, which reacts sharply to financial data, physical retail demand involves households buying gold for gifts and traditional jewellery. This local demand acts as a protective layer, or a buffer, for domestic prices. While high prices sometimes discourage buyers, the current trend suggests that consumers are continuing to purchase despite the record levels.

Global Factors Influencing Bullion

While local demand is strong, global market trends continue to influence the baseline price of gold. Spot gold is currently trading near $4,175.57 per ounce in international markets. Several macroeconomic factors are currently affecting these global prices. A decline in interest rates on US government bonds, known as US Treasury yields, often makes gold more attractive to international investors. When these yields drop, gold—which does not pay interest—becomes a more appealing alternative. Additionally, the recent cooling of crude oil prices has helped reduce immediate inflationary pressure, which in turn supports interest in gold as a store of value.

Silver and Other Metals

In contrast to the movement in gold, silver prices remained unchanged at ₹2,15,000 per kilogram. Silver often exhibits different volatility patterns compared to gold, as it is used both for investment and in various industrial processes. The stability in silver suggests that the current price rally is concentrated heavily in the gold segment.

Risks and Future Monitorables

Investors looking at the bullion market should consider that prices are sensitive to external changes. US monetary policy remains a critical variable. If global interest rates change or if central banks signal tighter policies, it can put downward pressure on gold prices globally. Furthermore, while the current surge is driven by festivals, the market will need to see if this demand sustains after the festive cycle ends.

Geopolitical risks, such as shipping concerns in key trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz, also influence crude oil prices and global inflation expectations. While these factors are secondary to the immediate festive demand in India right now, they are key long-term indicators. Trading activity in Indian bullion markets is expected to remain paused on Tuesday due to the Dussehra holiday, and market updates will resume following the break.
