Gold Prices Face Weekly Volatility Ahead of US Fed Decision

Gold and silver prices are bracing for potential swings as global markets await the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy announcement. While recent data shows stabilizing investor interest through ETF inflows, the market remains cautious. Investors are tracking key US economic indicators and central bank commentary to gauge the metal's next price trend.

Gold and silver are trading with caution this week as market participants prepare for the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision. Although gold managed a modest gain of roughly 0.9% last week, prices remain trapped in a five-week consolidation pattern. This indicates that traders are waiting for clearer macroeconomic signals before committing to a definitive price direction.

Impact of Macroeconomic Data

Recent movements in the bullion market have been influenced by a mix of factors. Easing US Treasury yields and a softening in crude oil prices have provided some temporary support to precious metals. Furthermore, exchange-traded fund (ETF) data highlights a shift in sentiment. The World Gold Council reported net inflows of 18.1 tonnes for the week ending July 24, marking a potential turnaround for July as the first month with positive inflows after two months of outflows. Despite this stabilization in institutional interest, speculators have generally avoided building large positions.

The Federal Reserve's Influence

The upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting is the primary focus for market participants. While the consensus expectation is for interest rates to remain unchanged, the possibility of future rate hikes has gained attention. Investors are looking to Fed Chair Warsh for guidance on the central bank's perspective on inflation and the likely policy path for September. Because gold does not pay interest, higher interest rates typically make the metal less attractive compared to yield-bearing assets like US Treasury bonds. Conversely, if the Fed adopts a more balanced tone, it could help gold maintain its current price floor.

Key Indicators and Technical Levels

Beyond the FOMC announcement, traders are closely watching US GDP reports, Core PCE inflation figures, and the Employment Cost Index. Any unexpected data in these areas could trigger renewed fluctuations in the US dollar and bond yields, both of which have an inverse relationship with gold prices. In terms of market positioning, gold continues to hold near the $4,030 per ounce level, showing consistent physical demand that helps offset selling pressure.

For traders monitoring technical indicators, support levels for spot gold are identified near $3,960 and $3,860, while resistance lies at $4,220 and $4,300. On the domestic front, MCX Gold is currently trading near Rs 1,41,400, with support levels observed at Rs 1,38,900 and Rs 1,36,000.

Silver is also experiencing a similar consolidation phase, trading within a narrow range between $55 and $62 per ounce. While sensitive to the US dollar's strength, silver continues to be supported by a structural supply deficit, which provides a long-term buffer for the metal. The next major movement in prices will likely depend on whether the Federal Reserve reinforces a higher-for-longer interest rate environment or signals a more flexible approach to future policy.
