Gold Prices Face Volatility as Fed Rate Hike Odds Rise

Gold is balancing between strong US labor data raising rate hike odds to 60% and solid central bank demand. Investors are now focused on upcoming PPI and CPI data, which will likely dictate the next price move for the metal ahead of the Federal Reserve’s September 16 meeting.

Gold prices are experiencing a period of uncertainty as traders weigh the impact of a resilient US economy against long-term investment demand. The recent surge in hiring—with 162,000 jobs added in August—has signaled to the market that the Federal Reserve may continue its restrictive policy to manage economic heat.

The market now assigns roughly a 60% probability to a Federal Reserve interest rate hike at the upcoming meeting on September 16. Higher interest rates typically create pressure on gold because they increase the opportunity cost of holding an asset that does not pay interest, such as bullion. When US Treasury yields rise, investors often favor these interest-bearing assets, which can lead to a cooling in gold prices.

The focus has shifted to the US inflation landscape. Upcoming data releases, including the Producer Price Index on September 11 and the Consumer Price Index on September 12, are critical. If these figures show higher-than-expected inflation, it will likely strengthen the case for a rate hike. Adding to the complexity are rising energy costs linked to geopolitical tensions, which create a two-way street for gold. While energy-driven inflation might support arguments for rate hikes, gold also gains appeal as a safe haven during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

Despite this short-term pressure, gold retains structural support. The People’s Bank of China has consistently expanded its reserves for 22 consecutive months. Additionally, global gold-backed ETFs have seen steady inflows of $27.7 billion year-to-date, suggesting that major institutions view price dips as an opportunity rather than a signal to exit the asset class.

For investors tracking domestic markets, MCX gold futures are currently trading in a range. The commodity is holding near a support level of ₹148,201. A failure to hold this floor could lead to further consolidation toward ₹144,811, while the metal would need to move past the ₹157,075 resistance mark to establish a stronger bullish trend. The coming days will be key as the market digests the inflation prints before the Federal Reserve’s final decision.
