Gold Prices Drop ₹2,100 on Federal Reserve Rate Hike Fears

Gold prices in India fell for the sixth straight day, sliding ₹2,100 to ₹1,56,100 per 10 grams. The decline is driven by hawkish signals from US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh regarding potential interest rate hikes, which have reduced the appeal of gold. Investors are now closely watching upcoming US labor market data for clues on the future direction of interest rates.

Gold prices in India saw a sharp decline on Wednesday, extending a six-day losing streak that has unsettled market participants. The precious metal dropped ₹2,100 to settle at ₹1,56,100 per 10 grams, marking a three-week low. This latest slide brings the total loss for the metal to ₹11,000 over the past week, as investors react to shifts in global monetary policy and rising economic uncertainty.

The primary driver behind this price correction is the change in the United States Federal Reserve's stance on interest rates. At the recent Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh provided hawkish commentary, signaling that the central bank may need to raise interest rates to combat persistent inflation. Markets have quickly priced in this possibility, with some estimates suggesting a 60% probability of a rate hike in September.

For gold, which is a non-yielding asset, higher interest rates often create pressure on prices. When interest rates rise, traditional financial assets like government bonds often offer better returns. As a result, investors tend to move money out of gold, which pays no interest or dividends, and into assets that provide regular income. This shift in capital is currently reflected in the net outflows from global gold-backed exchange-traded funds, which had previously enjoyed a sustained period of positive buying.

Silver has also tracked the bearish trend, falling ₹5,000 to reach ₹2,35,500 per kilogram. This decline reflects broader market nervousness, exacerbated by rising crude oil prices. Escalating geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran have created uncertainty in the energy markets, leading to concerns about renewed inflation. Because energy costs are a significant component of inflation, the market is wary of an environment where costs rise while central banks keep interest rates elevated to slow down the economy.

Investors are now focusing on incoming economic data from the United States to gauge how the Federal Reserve will act in the coming months. Specifically, the upcoming US labor market data is seen as a key indicator. Strong employment figures often give central banks the confidence to maintain or increase interest rates to keep the economy from overheating. Conversely, signs of a cooling labor market could change the outlook for policy, though for now, the prevailing market sentiment remains cautious.

Looking ahead, the volatility in precious metals is likely to continue until there is more clarity on the September Federal Reserve policy decision. Investors are monitoring the interplay between inflation data, job reports, and geopolitical developments, as these factors will likely dictate whether the current pressure on gold and silver persists or stabilizes.
