Brent Crude Jumps to $115 After Saudi Refinery Attack

Brent crude prices rose to $115.36 per barrel following a missile strike on a Saudi refinery, raising supply concerns. The news has pressured the Indian Rupee and kept domestic stock markets cautious as investors wait for the US Federal Reserve's policy decision.

Global oil prices surged to $115.36 per barrel on Wednesday after a missile strike targeted a major refinery in Saudi Arabia. The facility, which processes approximately 550,000 barrels per day, was hit by Houthi militants, leading to immediate fears about global energy supply stability. This spike in crude prices represents a significant concern for oil-importing nations like India, where higher energy costs can impact the national import bill and increase inflationary pressure.

The Indian Rupee showed sensitivity to these developments, trading at 95.07 against the US dollar. While the currency managed a modest gain of 8 paise during the session, this was largely supported by strategic intervention from the Reserve Bank of India. Despite this support, the currency has remained under pressure, having lost 77 paise over the last three trading sessions. A weaker rupee generally makes imports, including oil, more expensive, which can affect the margins of domestic companies that rely on imported raw materials.

Domestic stock markets remained cautious in response to the geopolitical uncertainty and fluctuating energy prices. The BSE Sensex closed nearly flat at 73,598.67, down 8.08 points, while the Nifty 50 finished at 22,749.75, a minor decline of 3.45 points. Investors engaged in profit-taking, particularly in the banking and information technology sectors, as they balanced the news of the supply disruption with anxiety ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting.

The central bank's decision on interest rates is a critical factor for global markets, and uncertainty regarding the interest rate path has led to a defensive market posture. For Indian investors, the immediate monitorables include the duration of the supply disruption at the Saudi refinery and how crude oil prices trend in the coming days. Sustained high energy prices, if they persist, may continue to influence both the Indian Rupee's performance and the profit outlook for energy-intensive sectors in India.
