Himadri Speciality Chemicals is allocating ₹240 crore toward carbon nanotube and super speciality carbon black production. These downstream projects aim to tap into the high-growth lithium-ion battery and electronics markets. Investors will track whether these capacity additions successfully diversify the company's revenue mix while managing capital spending over the next few years.
Himadri Speciality Chemicals Ltd. (HSCL) is set to expand its production capabilities with a ₹240 crore investment aimed at high-value carbon products. The company is directing ₹70 crore toward a new carbon nanotube (CNT) facility and ₹170 crore to develop super speciality carbon black (SSCB) capacity. These projects are designed to integrate deeper into the supply chain for advanced industries like lithium-ion batteries, semiconductors, and specialized plastics.
Project Timelines and Capacity
The carbon nanotube project, with a capacity of 200 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA), is scheduled to be ready by the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year. In contrast, the super speciality carbon black venture is a longer-term undertaking, with commissioning expected by the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2028. This SSCB facility will utilize 6,000 tonnes per annum of the company’s existing carbon black output, reflecting a strategic move to focus on premium, higher-margin applications.
Strategic Shift and Financial Performance
This expansion follows a period of growth for the company. In the June quarter, Himadri reported a 27% increase in net profit to ₹228 crore, while revenue rose 28% to ₹1,432 crore. Management has expressed that the move into energy materials is designed to capitalize on the global shift toward cleaner energy and high-performance electronics. The company is targeting significant revenue growth from these segments, projecting them to contribute to an overall target of ₹1,100 crore in net profit by FY28.
Investor Considerations
While the expansion highlights a move toward higher-value products, it also increases capital spending. Investors may look to track how the company maintains its profit margins while absorbing these project costs. The success of the CNT and SSCB ventures depends heavily on the company's ability to execute these technology-intensive projects on schedule and secure long-term demand from high-tech industries. Additionally, as the company operates in a sector influenced by global commodity cycles and raw material costs, maintaining operational efficiency remains crucial. Future updates to monitor include the successful commissioning of the CNT facility in the upcoming quarters and subsequent management updates regarding order bookings for these new product lines.
