The National Green Tribunal has dismissed all appeals against GHCL’s greenfield soda ash project in Gujarat’s Kutch district. This clearance removes a major legal hurdle for the company's expansion plans. Meanwhile, the company reported a 32% rise in Q1 FY27 profit despite a slight dip in total revenue.
GHCL Ltd received a major legal boost on August 21, 2026, as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Western Zone Bench in Pune dismissed all three appeals challenging its greenfield soda ash project. The ruling confirms that the environmental and forest clearances granted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the State of Gujarat are valid. This decision clears the way for the company to proceed with the planned manufacturing plant in Bada, Mandvi taluka.
The project is a significant long-term investment for the company, with an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. It is designed to add 500,000 metric tons of annual capacity. Soda ash is an essential raw material for sectors like glass, solar glass, and detergents, and it is seeing increased relevance in lithium battery production. On August 21, following the announcement, the company’s stock closed at ₹442.35, representing a marginal change of 0.15% for the day.
In its latest financial performance for the first quarter of FY27, GHCL reported a profit of ₹191.18 crore, a 32% increase compared to the previous year. This growth was achieved even though total income saw a slight decline of 3.06% to ₹798.01 crore. The company attributed this profit growth to better operational efficiency and a reduction in input costs, which helped the firm maintain its financial performance despite the drop in revenue.
Despite the positive legal outcome, the company remains cautious about future market conditions. Management has highlighted that global geopolitical conflicts and ongoing shipping disruptions could increase the cost of energy and raw materials. Additionally, the current soda ash market is experiencing a surplus in supply, which may place pressure on pricing and future profit margins. These global factors are important monitorables for investors, as they could influence the company’s ability to sustain its current profitability levels.
Looking ahead, the company is also diversifying its operations beyond soda ash. Its new Bromine and Vacuum Salt projects are nearing the final stages of completion. Management expects these facilities to begin commercial operations in the second quarter of the 2026-27 financial year, which will be the next key milestone for investors to watch.
