Balrampur Chini Hits 52-Week High on Bio-Plastic Plant Plans

Balrampur Chini Mills shares reached a 52-week high of ₹642 after updates on its ₹3,000 crore bio-plastic plant. The project, which aims to produce 80,000 tonnes of bioplastic annually, is expected to start commercial operations by the December 2026 quarter. Investors are weighing this new revenue stream against the project's large capital spending and execution timeline.

Detailed Coverage

Balrampur Chini Mills shares touched a new 52-week high of ₹642 on Tuesday, recording an intraday jump of 7%. The stock has maintained a strong momentum recently, rising 21% over the past month as market participants react to the company’s expansion into the bio-plastic sector.

Scaling Up with Poly Lactic Acid

The company is currently constructing India’s first large-scale Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) plant. This facility is designed with a capacity of 80,000 tonnes per annum. By using sugarcane as a raw material, the company aims to produce eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastics. The company expects this plant to generate roughly ₹2,000 crore in annual revenue once it begins operations, which are currently scheduled for the December quarter of the 2026-27 financial year.

This project represents a significant shift for the sugar manufacturer, allowing it to diversify beyond its traditional business. The initiative is supported by the Uttar Pradesh government’s Bio Plastic Industrial Policy of 2024, which provides a framework for such sustainable manufacturing projects.

Financial Context and Project Progress

The total cost for this expansion is estimated at more than ₹3,000 crore. According to information from Crisil Ratings, the project is moving forward as planned. As of January 2026, the company had already deployed ₹1,421 crore toward the construction. While the project is on track, the rating agency has pointed out that the company’s ability to manage costs, finalize the project on time, and secure expected incentives will be important for its long-term financial health.

For investors, this large capital spending program is a key factor to watch. While the potential for new revenue is high, such massive investments require careful monitoring of the company’s debt levels and cash flow. The sugar industry is often sensitive to raw material availability and government policy changes, so the success of this diversification will depend on the company’s ability to successfully transition to this new business model without facing significant cost increases or delays.

Looking ahead, shareholders will be watching for updates on the commissioning date and any signs of early demand for these bio-plastic products as the plant nears completion later this year.
