Adperma Starts Rs 6,000-Cr Haldia Phenol Plant in Dec

Adperma Private Ltd, a subsidiary of Haldia Petrochemicals, will start its Rs 6,000-crore phenol and acetone facility in Haldia this December. The plant adds annual capacity of 3.45 lakh tonnes of phenol and 2.15 lakh tonnes of acetone to help reduce import dependence. This expansion targets sectors like pharmaceuticals and resins while facing competition from existing domestic producers.

Adperma Private Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd, is set to begin commercial production at its new phenol and acetone facility in Haldia, West Bengal, by December 2026. This Rs 6,000-crore project represents a strategic effort to expand India’s domestic chemical manufacturing base. The facility was officially inaugurated in October, marking the final stages of operational readiness.

The complex is designed for a total annual capacity of 3.45 lakh tonnes of phenol and 2.15 lakh tonnes of acetone. These chemicals are critical inputs for various industries, including the production of pharmaceuticals, resins, adhesives, paints, and plywood. By establishing this integrated unit, the company intends to lower India’s historical reliance on imported chemical feedstocks.

Currently, domestic manufacturers often rely on global suppliers for these chemicals, which can expose them to price volatility and supply chain disruptions. The Haldia plant aims to provide a more localized supply chain, particularly for manufacturers on the East Coast. This localized availability can help reduce logistics costs and offer greater stability for manufacturers who depend on these raw materials.

Investors and market observers will monitor the facility’s commercial ramp-up, as the petrochemical sector is inherently cyclical. Profit margins in phenol and acetone production are often tied to global feedstock prices and international demand. The project will also operate in a market with existing domestic competition, as other established players like Deepak Phenolics already operate large-scale phenol and acetone facilities in India.

The success of the project will depend on the company's ability to maintain efficient operations and manage price competition with imported alternatives. As the plant transitions into full-scale production, the key focus for stakeholders will be how quickly it achieves optimal capacity utilization and its impact on the pricing dynamics within the domestic chemical market.
