VA Tech Wabag Shares Rise 5% After Motilal Oswal Buy Call

Shares of VA Tech Wabag rallied over 5% on August 14, 2026, following a 'Buy' rating initiation by Motilal Oswal with a price target of ₹2,529. The company reported a record order book of ₹19,400 crore in Q1 FY27, though investors remain focused on margin stability and project execution timelines.

VA Tech Wabag shares rallied over 5% to hit an intraday high of ₹1,984 on Friday, August 14, 2026. This market movement followed a research report by brokerage firm Motilal Oswal, which initiated coverage on the water technology company with a 'Buy' rating and a target price of ₹2,529.

The stock reaction comes alongside the company's first-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2027. VA Tech Wabag reported a 21% year-on-year increase in revenue, reaching ₹886.8 crore. Net profit for the quarter rose by 37% to ₹90.1 crore. A major driver for the company is its record-high order book, which now stands at approximately ₹19,400 crore, providing visibility for revenue in the upcoming quarters.

Brokerage Rationale and Financials

Motilal Oswal’s initiation is supported by the company's strong operational performance in its Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) segment and expansion in international markets, referred to as 'Rest of the World' (RoW). The brokerage highlighted that the company has maintained a net cash-positive balance sheet for 14 consecutive quarters. This financial discipline is expected to support future cash flow and improve return ratios, such as the Return on Capital Employed (RoCE), in the coming years.

Operational Risks and Margin Nuance

While the order book provides a strong foundation, the company faces operational challenges that investors typically track. Operating margins have experienced pressure due to rising raw material and operational costs, which at times have challenged the company's 13% medium-term margin target. Furthermore, the company observed a sequential decline in consolidated net profit in Q1 FY27 compared to the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year.

Another aspect for investors to consider is the reliance on non-operating items. The company’s reported operating performance has been supported by foreign exchange gains. Because these gains do not come from core business activities, market analysts often focus on the underlying core profitability to understand the business's true performance. The nature of the EPC business, which relies on long-term project cycles, can also cause revenue growth to appear lumpy rather than steady.

Going forward, the key factor for shareholders will be the company's ability to convert its record order book into actual revenue without project delays or significant cost increases. Monitoring the stability of operating margins and the consistency of cash flows will remain critical, as these will determine whether the company can maintain its growth momentum and improve its return on invested capital as projected.
