Brokerage firm Motilal Oswal has maintained a 'sell' rating on Tata Technologies, setting a target price of ₹630. The brokerage cited high valuation and profit margins missing estimates in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, despite forecasts for stronger growth in the second half of the year.
Tata Technologies has received a cautious outlook from brokerage firm Motilal Oswal following the company's second-quarter financial results for fiscal year 2027. The brokerage has reiterated a 'sell' rating, suggesting a potential 15% downside from current market levels with a target price of ₹630. This stance follows the company's report of profitability metrics that fell short of analyst estimates.
In the second quarter, Tata Technologies reported revenue of $178 million, which grew by 1.9% compared to the previous quarter. While the company's services business saw a sequential growth of 4.3%, its overall profit margins came under pressure. The company reported an operating profit margin, known as EBIT margin, of 12.9%, which was below the 13.5% projection set by Motilal Oswal.
This gap between expected and actual performance was also visible in the bottom line. The company's adjusted profit after tax for the quarter stood at ₹171.4 crore. This figure was lower than the ₹200.4 crore that the brokerage firm had anticipated. While the company recorded growth in revenue and profit over the first half of the year, the brokerage highlighted that the current market valuation remains a key point of concern.
Valuation and Growth Outlook
Motilal Oswal noted that Tata Technologies is currently trading at approximately 32 times its 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio. This ratio, which shows how much investors are paying for every rupee of projected earnings, is considered expensive by the brokerage when compared to the company’s current growth trajectory. The firm suggests that such a high valuation leaves limited room for price increases unless the company significantly outperforms its profit targets.
Despite the current concerns, the brokerage does expect a pick-up in business activity in the second half of the fiscal year. They project that revenue, operating profit, and adjusted profit could grow significantly in the coming months on a year-on-year basis. However, this expected improvement has not changed the firm's cautious view, as they believe the current stock price already reflects these positive growth expectations.
Business Risks and Monitoring
For investors, understanding the company's business model is important. Tata Technologies is primarily an engineering and digital services provider for the automotive sector. Because a significant portion of its revenue is linked to parent companies like Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover, its performance often depends on the capital spending and product development cycles of these automakers. Investors may watch whether the company can successfully diversify its client base and improve its profit margins in the coming quarters. The primary monitorables will be the actual execution of the expected growth in the second half and the company's ability to protect its profit margins against operational costs.
