Tata Steel: Brokerage Estimates Upside Linked to FY28 Outlook

Motilal Oswal projects potential gains for Tata Steel based on FY28 earnings expectations. The outlook relies on steady domestic demand and structural improvements in European operations. Investors are tracking how the company manages debt levels and energy costs in a volatile global market.

Motilal Oswal Financial Services has released a research note on Tata Steel, maintaining a positive view on the stock with a target price of Rs 220 based on projections for the 2028 financial year. The analysis suggests that the company’s ability to generate value is primarily tied to its core Indian operations, which continue to benefit from consistent domestic demand and favorable pricing trends across the country.

European Market Adjustments

For years, Tata Steel’s European business has been a challenge due to high operating costs and market volatility. The latest outlook points to potential structural improvements in this segment. The implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and stricter import quotas are expected to influence the European market. These regulatory shifts may foster better pricing discipline by limiting the influx of cheaper imports. While these changes aim to stabilize margins, the brokerage notes that near-term profitability remains vulnerable to fluctuating energy prices and the speed of demand recovery in the region.

Balance Sheet and Debt Management

Institutional investors remain focused on the company’s capital structure. As of the recent financial period, Tata Steel’s net debt stands at approximately Rs 82,300 crore, against cash reserves of Rs 10,000 crore. This results in a net debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 2.4x, a metric closely watched by those monitoring the company’s ability to manage its financial obligations. For investors, the level of debt in a capital-intensive industry like steel is important because it dictates how much cash can be used for expansion versus paying off interest.

Valuation and Sector Context

The current valuation of the stock is trading at roughly 6.8 times the projected EV/EBITDA for FY28. This valuation reflects both the ongoing consolidation efforts and the long-term potential of the business as European operations stabilize. The steel sector is cyclical, meaning it often experiences sharp highs and lows based on global industrial demand and raw material prices. Because of this, the company’s performance is sensitive to factors beyond its direct control, such as global economic growth and input costs.

Investor Monitorables

Going forward, the most important updates for investors to track include the actual execution of the European turnaround strategy and the trend in domestic steel consumption. Any significant rise in raw material costs or a sudden dip in global steel prices could put pressure on profit margins. Additionally, investors will watch the management's efforts to reduce debt levels, as this remains a key factor in improving the balance sheet health and enhancing shareholder value over the coming years.
