TCG Asset Management Targets Small-Cap Turnarounds With PE Strategy

TCG Asset Management, led by Shahzad Madon, is applying private equity-style due diligence to a concentrated portfolio of 15-20 small and mid-cap stocks. With ₹400 crore in assets, the firm focuses on companies with low debt and potential for non-linear growth through corporate actions. This niche approach aims to deliver long-term value by identifying turnaround opportunities in a volatile market.

Detailed Coverage

TCG Asset Management, part of Dr. Purnendu Chatterjee’s conglomerate, is attempting to stand out in the crowded Indian investment landscape by blending the intense research methods of private equity with the liquidity of the stock market. Since its relaunch in October 2024, the firm has focused on a concentrated strategy, typically holding between 15 and 20 stocks. The portfolio primarily targets small and mid-cap companies, which have an average market capitalization of approximately ₹11,289 crore.

Investment Philosophy and Due Diligence

Unlike traditional mutual funds that often hold diversified portfolios, TCG AMC uses a high-conviction approach. The investment team, featuring professionals like Vivek Ganguly and Gopal Khaitan, conducts forensic due diligence that goes beyond typical financial statements. This includes hiring external specialists to examine the digital footprint of companies and consulting niche sector experts. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors are also integrated into their risk assessment process. The firm focuses on companies with a debt-to-equity ratio of roughly 0.2x, favoring businesses that generate enough internal cash to fund their own expansion.

Seeking Non-Linear Growth Drivers

What differentiates this strategy is the hunt for specific catalysts, often called kicker events. These include regulatory changes, structural turnarounds, or significant corporate actions that could shift the business trajectory more quickly than organic earnings growth alone. For instance, the firm highlighted ZF Commercial Vehicle, citing potential benefits from safety mandates, and DB Corp, where they are betting on the company's ability to monetize legacy print media through digital avenues. Other selections like Orkla India reflect a preference for established consumer franchises. The firm has also launched a second portfolio centered on structural themes like defense, energy transition, and digital infrastructure, with holdings such as Reliance, L&T, and Hitachi Energy.

Navigating Market Cycles

Since its October 2024 relaunch, the flagship strategy has recorded a return of 0.7%. During the same timeframe, the Nifty Smallcap 250 TRI returned -2.5%, while the BSE 500 TRI remained flat at 0%. Management has noted that launching during a period of market correction helps in setting realistic performance expectations compared to entering during a peak bull market. As the firm manages approximately ₹400 crore across its offerings, the next phase of growth involves expanding its physical presence in India. Investors should continue to monitor how this highly concentrated, research-intensive model performs as the firm scales its assets under management and navigates broader sector volatility.
