Sharda Cropchem Q1 Profit Falls 38% Despite EBITDA Growth

Sharda Cropchem reported a 38% drop in Q1FY27 profit to Rs 880 million, primarily due to lower foreign exchange gains compared to the previous year. However, revenue grew 9% to Rs 10.7 billion, driven by higher product pricing. Investors are monitoring the company’s ability to maintain margins as it balances regional demand weakness in Europe with its strategy to expand product registrations.

Sharda Cropchem’s financial performance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 shows a mix of operational growth and bottom-line pressure. While the company achieved a 9% year-on-year increase in revenue to Rs 10.7 billion, its profit after tax fell by 38% to Rs 880 million. This decline was largely tied to the normalization of foreign exchange gains, which dropped significantly to Rs 75 million from Rs 731 million in the same period last year.

Operational Performance and Margin Trends

On the operational front, the company demonstrated resilience. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) grew by 25% year-on-year to Rs 1.8 billion, exceeding market estimates. The EBITDA margin improved by 220 basis points to 16.6%, helped by a 120 basis point expansion in gross margins to 36.7%. This margin improvement was achieved despite an 11% decline in revenue from Europe, which traditionally serves as a high-margin region for the firm. Management attributed this performance to a favorable product mix and price increases of 12.7%, which managed to offset lower sales volumes.

Financial Position and Future Outlook

Sharda Cropchem maintains a debt-free balance sheet, which provides the company with financial flexibility as it continues to invest in new product registrations. Management has provided a revenue growth guidance of 10-15% for FY27, citing ongoing geopolitical volatility as a factor to watch. The company expects gross margins to stay within the 35-37% range, with EBITDA margins projected between 18-20% for the full fiscal year.

Strategic Considerations for Investors

The company’s business model relies heavily on its ability to secure regulatory registrations for agrochemical products globally, which involves long lead times and execution risk. While the current debt-free status is a positive, the sharp fluctuation in foreign exchange gains highlights the company's sensitivity to global currency movements. Investors should track whether the company can sustain its margin improvements in the face of continued regional weakness in Europe and if it can meet its registration targets to support long-term revenue growth. Future updates regarding the performance of new product launches and overall export demand will be key indicators for the company's trajectory throughout the year.
