SBI Life Insurance reported a 7% year-on-year increase in new business premiums for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027. Despite a strong rise in profitability margins to 29.2%, the company’s net profit of Rs 550 crore fell short of some market expectations. Investors are now monitoring how the insurer manages margin sustainability amid rising sector competition.
SBI Life Insurance delivered a stable performance for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, highlighting growth in its new business segment. The company reported that its new business annual premium equivalent (APE)—a key measure of the value of new insurance policies sold—reached Rs 6,370 crore. This marks a 7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. A major positive for the quarter was the improvement in the value of new business (VNB) margin, which climbed to 29.2% from 27.9% in the same quarter last year. This margin, which reflects the expected profitability of new policies, exceeded analyst estimates of 27.5%.
While the operational performance showed resilience, the company’s bottom-line results drew attention. The reported profit after tax of Rs 550 crore represented a 10% miss against some market estimates. Despite this quarterly shortfall, the insurer has recorded 17% profit growth during the first half of the fiscal year, suggesting a broader trend of positive momentum in its underlying business. The profit miss is something investors may watch, as it highlights potential variability in quarterly earnings.
Following the results, Motilal Oswal Financial Services maintained a 'buy' rating on the stock, though it adjusted its target price to Rs 2,100 per share. The brokerage noted that the company’s resilience in protection demand and consistent performance in non-linked products are essential for meeting its VNB margin guidance, which is expected to stay at the upper end of the 26-28% range. The valuation provided by the analyst is based on 1.9 times the projected price-to-embedded value for fiscal year 2028.
The company is currently focusing on strategic investments to bolster both its digital and agency sales channels. Analysts believe these efforts will help maintain growth momentum throughout the remainder of the fiscal year. Furthermore, the bancassurance channel, which involves selling policies through bank branches, is showing signs of a gradual recovery. This is expected to complement the agency channel's performance, which has been normalizing in recent months. With an operating return on embedded value holding steady at approximately 18%, the firm appears well-positioned to meet its target of 14-15% growth for the full fiscal year.
Looking ahead, investors may focus on whether the insurer can continue to expand its margins in a competitive market. Key factors to track include the sustainability of the current product mix, the effectiveness of the digital and agency channel expansions, and the broader insurance sector demand. The company’s ability to defend its market share against rivals while maintaining consistent profitability will remain a primary focus for shareholders in the coming quarters.
