SBI Funds Management Margins Feel Pressure From Rising Costs

SBI Funds Management reported a 4% increase in average assets under management to 13.1 trillion rupees. However, higher spending on technology and talent led to a 1% drop in EBITDA. Following these results, analysts at Emkay Global have lowered their financial projections for the next few years. Investors may monitor whether these strategic investments successfully drive future profitability.

SBI Funds Management (SBI AMC) reported a 4% rise in its quarterly average assets under management, reaching 13.1 trillion rupees. While this growth highlights the company's significant position in the Indian mutual fund industry, rising operational costs have put pressure on its short-term profit margins.

The company experienced a 25% increase in employee-related costs and an 18% jump in other operational expenses during the recent quarter. Management attributed these expenses to strategic initiatives, including investments in cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence, as well as the hiring of new talent to expand its alternates business. As a direct result of these costs outpacing revenue growth, the company's EBITDA, a key measure of operating profit, declined by 1%.

Despite the pressure on operating margins, the firm reported a profit after tax of 7 billion rupees. This figure was supported by stronger-than-anticipated income from its investments. However, revenue yields showed a slight contraction, and overall operational spending remained high as the company continues to invest in its long-term technology and talent requirements.

Following these quarterly results, analysts at Emkay Global have revised their financial estimates for the company. Revenue projections for the fiscal years 2027 through 2029 have been lowered by 2% to 5%, while EBITDA estimates have been reduced by 3% to 6%. The brokerage also adjusted its price target for the company to 600 rupees, reflecting a more cautious view on the impact of persistent cost structures.

The firm's focus on technology and the alternates asset class suggests a strategy aimed at capturing future market demand. Investors may want to track how these investments affect future margins and whether the company can maintain its 15% market share while managing higher operational spending. Additionally, robust inflows from Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) and growing investor interest in hybrid fund offerings continue to act as positive factors for the company’s ongoing revenue generation.
