SBI Funds Management: Jefferies Starts Coverage With Buy, Sets Rs 710 Target

Global brokerage Jefferies has initiated coverage on SBI Funds Management with a 'Buy' rating and a price target of Rs 710. The report highlights the firm's exclusive distribution network through State Bank of India as a key competitive advantage. Investors are keeping a close watch on the company’s growth trajectory as it navigates the competitive mutual fund sector following its July 2026 market debut.

Global brokerage firm Jefferies has started coverage on SBI Funds Management, assigning a 'Buy' rating to the stock and setting a price target of Rs 710. This announcement comes roughly one month after the company’s public listing in July 2026. The brokerage’s optimistic outlook is primarily based on the asset manager’s ability to tap into the massive network of its parent company, the State Bank of India.

At the core of the brokerage's positive view is the company's access to what it describes as a 'distribution moat.' Because the firm is linked to the State Bank of India, it can reach investors across the country, especially in smaller tier-two and tier-three cities, more easily than many competitors. This setup helps the company bring in new money without spending as much on marketing or branch expansion. Jefferies expects this advantage to help the firm grow its operating profit at a yearly rate of 15% through the fiscal year 2029.

Financial projections from the brokerage also highlight an expected 18% yearly growth in assets under management, which refers to the total amount of money the company manages for its clients. This growth is anticipated to come from a diverse mix of investment schemes that cater to different types of investors. The company, which is currently the largest asset management firm in India by total money managed, continues to scale its operations even as it settles into life as a publicly traded company.

While the outlook highlights long-term growth, the company faces distinct challenges that investors should consider. A significant portion of the firm's growth is tied to its exclusive distribution relationship with the State Bank of India. If this partnership were to face changes or if the bank alters its distribution strategy, it could impact the company's ability to gather new assets. Furthermore, the mutual fund industry is highly competitive, and the firm’s success depends on its ability to maintain consistent investment returns. If the performance of its funds lags behind peers, it could lead to investors moving their money elsewhere.

Since its listing in July, the stock has experienced fluctuations, which is common for companies that have recently entered the stock market. Valuation is another factor for investors to track, as the stock trades at higher price multiples, meaning the company must deliver on its growth promises to justify current prices. The key for shareholders to monitor in upcoming quarters will be the firm’s ability to increase its total money managed and maintain profit margins while managing the inherent risks of the financial services sector.
