Reliance Industries Q1 Results Beat Estimates; O2C Drives Growth

Reliance Industries reported record quarterly recurring profit, driven by strong performance in its oil-to-chemicals and digital services segments. The company's results outperformed market expectations, though retail margins remain a focal point for investors. Several brokerages have maintained positive outlooks based on the company's progress in new energy and consumer business expansion.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) delivered a strong performance in the fiscal first quarter, with consolidated earnings surpassing market expectations. The conglomerate reported its highest-ever recurring quarterly operating profit, supported by double-digit growth across its core business segments. The oil-to-chemicals (O2C) division, in particular, acted as a major pillar of strength, achieving a four-year high in EBITDA of approximately Rs 17,000 crore, even as the company navigated a complex global environment for crude oil and refining margins.

Segment Performance and Retail Focus

The digital services arm, Jio, continued its steady growth trajectory during the April-June quarter, bolstered by consistent subscriber additions and an improvement in the average revenue per user (ARPU). Simultaneously, the company’s exploration and production segment saw its EBITDA rise to around Rs 5,000 crore. While the consumer-facing retail business showed resilience, recent reports indicate that investors are keeping a close watch on margin recovery within this division, which faced some pressure during the quarter.

Management has maintained an ambitious outlook for its consumer-facing businesses, with a publicly stated goal to double the retail division's EBITDA over the next three years. This target, alongside the ongoing execution of large-scale capital projects in the new energy space—including integrated solar photovoltaic and battery manufacturing facilities—serves as a primary focus for long-term growth. Analysts suggest that the successful commissioning of these projects will be a key factor in the company’s future earnings trajectory.

Brokerage Views and Market Context

Following the results, several global brokerages updated their views on the stock. Firms such as Goldman Sachs, Nomura, CLSA, and Macquarie maintained 'Buy' or 'Outperform' ratings, citing the quality of earnings and the robustness of the O2C business as primary reasons for their positive stance. Brokerage reports highlighted that better-than-expected refining and chemicals performance helped offset softness in other areas. Reliance Industries shares were trading near Rs 1,327.80 on Monday morning, showing minimal movement following the announcement.

For investors, the path forward involves tracking the company’s ability to maintain high margins in its energy business while simultaneously ramping up execution in its new energy initiatives. The pace of retail margin recovery and the actual realization of planned value-unlocking in the FMCG and media segments remain important monitorables. Additionally, investors will be observing how the company balances its significant capital spending on green energy projects with its existing debt and cash flow requirements.
