RBL Bank Shares Fall 7% Despite Emkay Global Target Hike

RBL Bank stock dropped over 7% on October 13, 2026, as investors reacted to elevated provisions and valuation concerns, overshadowing a price target hike to Rs 475 by Emkay Global. While the bank reported strong profit growth, the market remains cautious about margin pressure and high provisioning levels.

RBL Bank shares faced significant selling pressure on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, falling over 7% to an intraday low of Rs 388. This sharp decline occurred even as brokerage firm Emkay Global raised its price target for the stock to Rs 475, citing a positive outlook on the bank's lending strategy. The market's negative reaction suggests that investors are focusing more on specific financial hurdles rather than the headline growth numbers.

Understanding the Financial Results

The bank’s second-quarter results for fiscal year 2027 presented a mixed picture for shareholders. On the positive side, the lender reported a net profit of Rs 481.77 crore, marking a 170% increase compared to the same period last year. Net interest income, which is the money earned from core lending activities, also grew by a healthy 37.4% to reach Rs 2,131 crore.

Despite this strong top-line performance, investor sentiment was dampened by the bank’s provision numbers. RBL Bank set aside Rs 766.5 crore as provisions during the quarter. High provisioning acts as a buffer against potential future losses but directly eats into the bank's profitability, leading to disappointment among investors who expected lower numbers. This has created a gap between the bank's reported earnings and market expectations.

Asset Quality and Valuation Concerns

There were clear signs of improvement in the bank's asset quality. Gross non-performing assets, or bad loans, dropped to 1.02% from 1.3% in the previous period, while net non-performing assets fell to 0.29% from 0.37%. While this improvement is a positive operational development, it appears to have been priced into the stock during its previous 44% rally over the past year. Analysts and investors are now scrutinizing whether current valuations, which some consider stretched, leave enough room for further upside without faster earnings growth.

Strategic Challenges Ahead

The bank is currently managing surplus liquidity, including capital mobilized through foreign currency swap facilities. While this provides stability, it also brings challenges for profit margins. Management is shifting focus toward wholesale and secured retail lending to utilize this capital, but analysts expect near-term pressure on net interest margins. The full impact of these liquidity-related costs, combined with a potentially muted growth in earnings per share, remains a key monitorable for the coming quarters.

For investors, the primary focus will remain on how the bank balances its loan book expansion with the need to keep provisioning costs under control. Future updates on margin stability and the sustainability of the current growth trajectory will likely determine the stock's direction in the coming months.
