RBI Repo Rate Hike Shakes Nifty; Traders Watch RBA, BBOX

The Nifty 50 fell 0.76% to 22,603 after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised the repo rate to 5.50%, raising concerns over borrowing costs. As markets digest the news, analysts have pointed to potential technical setups in Restaurant Brands Asia and Black Box Limited, while flagging bearish pressure on Tata Steel futures.

Indian equity markets faced pressure on October 7, 2026, as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced a 25 basis point hike in the repo rate, bringing it to 5.50%. The Nifty 50 dropped 173 points, or 0.76%, to close at 22,603.05, while the BSE Sensex fell 0.59% to 72,638.70. The interest rate hike signals a shift toward tighter monetary policy, which typically raises the cost of capital for businesses and can impact consumer spending.

Despite the decline, technical analysts are monitoring the market for signs of a turnaround. The Nifty 50 is currently testing a support zone between 22,400 and 22,470. A failure to hold this level could signal further weakness, while maintaining this support might allow the index to test resistance near its 20-day moving average. The banking sector showed relative resilience, gaining 0.92% as major lenders provided some stability to the broader index.

Amid this volatility, analysts have focused on specific stocks showing technical breakouts. Restaurant Brands Asia (RBA) has caught attention for clearing a falling wedge pattern, a signal often tracked for potential trend reversals. Investors and analysts are monitoring how the stock holds its current levels, especially given the challenging environment for consumer-facing businesses when interest rates rise.

Black Box Limited (BBOX) has also emerged as a point of focus. The company has shown technical strength following a consolidation period supported by higher trading volumes. Beyond the charts, Black Box holds a substantial order backlog of approximately $792 million and has set a target of roughly 20% revenue growth for the 2027 fiscal year. This fundamental buffer is a key metric investors often weigh against technical signals.

On the other side of the spectrum, the outlook for Tata Steel appears more cautious. The stock has breached its recent trading range, leading analysts to identify a bearish signal in its futures segment. Investors often view this as a reflection of broader concerns regarding the steel sector, which faces pressure from fluctuating commodity prices and global demand uncertainties.

Going forward, the primary risk for the market remains the impact of the higher repo rate on corporate margins and consumer demand. Companies with high debt levels may see interest expenses rise, potentially affecting profitability in coming quarters. Investors should monitor whether the Nifty support levels hold in the coming sessions and how specific companies navigate the tightening credit environment.
