Prabhudas Lilladher Retains HDFC Bank Buy Call, Target ₹950

Brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher has kept a 'Buy' rating on HDFC Bank, setting a target price of ₹950. The update follows the RBI's approval for Anup Bagchi to take over as MD & CEO in October 2026. Investors are now watching how the new leadership will manage the bank's deposit growth and profit margins amid shifting market conditions.

Brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher has maintained its 'Buy' rating on HDFC Bank, setting a price target of ₹950 per share. This outlook comes at a key moment for the lender as it prepares for a change in its top leadership.

New Leadership and Strategic Focus

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Anup Bagchi as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC Bank for a three-year term, effective October 2026. Bagchi, who brings three decades of experience from the ICICI group, joined the board as an Additional Director earlier in October to assist with the transition. Investors are looking to see how this leadership change will influence the bank's internal processes and its ability to navigate current market challenges.

Current Financial Context

For the second quarter of the 2027 financial year, the bank reported provisional data showing gross advances growth of 16.3% and deposit growth of 18.8% year-on-year. While these figures indicate continued expansion, the bank is currently focused on optimizing its loan-to-deposit ratio—a key metric that measures how much of the bank's lending is funded by customer deposits. The current goal is to bring this ratio closer to 90%.

Key Challenges for Investors

While the brokerage remains positive on the stock, several hurdles persist that could impact performance. A primary area of concern is the pressure on net interest margins, which refers to the difference between the interest a bank earns on loans and the interest it pays on deposits. Competitive pressure to attract deposits, combined with a changing loan mix, has made it difficult to keep these margins stable.

Beyond margins, there is an underlying execution risk. Bringing in a new leader often leads to internal restructuring and adjustments in how the bank operates. Investors will be observing whether the bank can meet its growth targets while simultaneously improving its transparency and aligning its internal performance guidance with actual quarterly results. The ability of the new leadership to strike a balance between aggressive growth and maintaining a healthy balance sheet will be the most important factor for shareholders in the coming quarters.

Looking ahead, the primary monitorables for investors will be the bank's ability to maintain its deposit mobilization momentum to support lending, the stabilization of net interest margins, and updates from the new management team on their long-term strategic priorities.
