Prabhudas Lilladher Keeps Accumulate Rating on Bank of Baroda at ₹280 Target

Brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher has retained its 'Accumulate' rating on Bank of Baroda with a ₹280 target following Q2 FY27 results. While the bank reported a 36% jump in net profit, the performance was supported by a one-time gain from an NSE stake sale. Investors are closely watching the impact of shrinking net interest margins and slow core operating growth on future profitability.

Brokerage firm Prabhudas Lilladher has maintained its 'Accumulate' rating on Bank of Baroda shares, keeping the price target at ₹280. This follows the bank's second-quarter financial results for the 2027 fiscal year, where the company reported a 36% year-on-year increase in net profit, reaching ₹6,532 crore. However, financial analysts note that this strong bottom-line growth was largely driven by a one-time gain of approximately ₹1,340 crore from the partial sale of the bank's stake in the National Stock Exchange.

While the headline profit figures appear robust, the bank is facing underlying operational challenges. Core pre-provision operating profit, which helps measure the bank's ability to generate earnings from its main lending business, has faced pressure due to rising operating expenses. Additionally, the bank reported that its Net Interest Margin—a key metric representing the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits—declined to 2.74% in Q2 FY27, down from 2.96% in the same period last year. This margin pressure is a critical factor for investors, as it reflects the difficulty of maintaining profitability in a highly competitive banking sector.

To address future liquidity and balance sheet strength, the bank's management has strategically utilized the proceeds from the NSE stake sale. A significant portion of this gain has been allocated toward prudential provisions to meet future credit loss requirements. This approach suggests a focus on risk management amid an environment where core loan accretion has remained relatively muted. The bank has provided guidance for 13% to 15% credit growth and 11% to 13% deposit growth for the current fiscal year.

Investors may also track the bank’s Loan-to-Deposit Ratio (LDR), as high LDR levels require careful management to ensure sufficient liquidity. Regarding governance, the bank has clarified that it has not been served in any legal suit by Dr. BR Shetty, addressing concerns that had surfaced in recent media reports. Moving forward, the key monitorables for shareholders will be the stability of net interest margins, the ability to control operating costs, and the actual execution of the bank's credit growth guidance. The ongoing trend in domestic loan growth, particularly in corporate versus retail segments, will likely dictate the market's outlook on the bank’s operational health in the coming quarters.
