Prabhudas Lilladher Cuts Colgate-Palmolive Target To Rs 1,837

Prabhudas Lilladher has lowered its price target for Colgate-Palmolive (India) to Rs 1,837, citing margin pressure and slowing consumer demand. While the company achieved 8% volume growth through its premium products, high advertising spending and rising raw material costs have prompted a more cautious outlook. Analysts expect a moderate growth path for the consumer goods major as the broader FMCG sector faces cooling interest.

Prabhudas Lilladher has lowered its price target for Colgate-Palmolive (India) to Rs 1,837, down from its earlier target of Rs 2,114. This revision reflects a more cautious stance on the company's profitability in the face of rising input costs and sustained high spending on advertising and promotional activities.

While the company has been active in marketing its premium toothpaste portfolio, these costs have weighed on overall profit margins. The brokerage noted that although advertising expenditures appear to have hit a peak, the ongoing competitive pressure in the market remains a hurdle. This comes at a time when many consumer goods companies are finding it difficult to maintain margins while balancing the need to gain market share.

In the second quarter, Colgate-Palmolive (India) reported revenue of Rs 17 billion, marking a 12.3% increase compared to the same period last year. This performance was supported by an 8% rise in sales volume, largely driven by the popularity of premium products like Max Fresh, Colgate Total, and Visible White. However, the brokerage pointed out that demand for core, mass-market offerings such as Colgate Strong Teeth and Ved Shakti has shown signs of cooling. This split in demand highlights the challenges currently faced by the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, where urban and rural consumption patterns have become more unpredictable.

The brokerage has adjusted its valuation expectation, assigning a 30x multiple to its September 2028 earnings projections, down from the previous 35x. This shift is in line with a broader trend of lower valuations across the consumption sector. Currently, the stock trades at roughly 26.6x its projected earnings for fiscal year 2029, with a dividend yield of around 3%, which some analysts view as a potential floor for the stock price.

For investors, the key monitorable will be how the company manages its spending versus volume growth in the coming quarters. The ability to keep premium segments growing while managing the impact of inflation on core product demand will be crucial for maintaining profit margins. Investors may also track management commentary on rural demand recovery, which has been a point of focus for the entire FMCG sector recently.
