Piramal Pharma Shares Rise 18% After Surprise Q2 Profit

Piramal Pharma shares hit an 18-month high as the company reported a surprise net profit of Rs 5 crore for the second quarter. This marks a significant turnaround from the loss recorded last year, driven by a 28% increase in revenue. Investors are responding to strong growth in the contract manufacturing business, which beat analyst expectations.

Piramal Pharma shares jumped 18% to reach an 18-month high today following the release of its financial results for the July-September quarter. The company surprised the market by posting a consolidated net profit of Rs 5 crore, a significant shift from the net loss of Rs 99.22 crore reported during the same period last year. This performance was notably stronger than analyst expectations, which had forecasted a continued loss of over Rs 70 crore for the quarter.

Revenue growth was a key highlight for the quarter, with the company generating Rs 2,617 crore, representing a 28% increase compared to the previous year. This revenue performance exceeded consensus estimates of Rs 2,327 crore. While total expenses also climbed to Rs 2,589.10 crore, the company's top-line growth was sufficient to turn the bottom line positive for the quarter.

The improvement in performance was largely driven by the company’s contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) segment. This business, which involves manufacturing drugs for other pharmaceutical firms, has been gaining momentum due to a recovering funding environment in the global biopharma sector. Additionally, the company reported positive results from its consumer health division, supported by the performance of its key brands and expanded reach through e-commerce channels.

Following the announcement, analysts at Choice Institutional Equities upgraded their outlook on the stock to 'Add' with a target price of Rs 250. The brokerage noted that the company’s underlying earnings potential may be masked by higher tax rates linked to its overseas operations.

For investors, the key monitorable going forward will be the sustainability of these margins and the consistency of the order inflow in the CDMO business, which can sometimes be volatile. The company’s ability to execute complex product launches and manage costs effectively will be critical in the coming quarters. Investors may also track management’s commentary on how global biopharma demand trends are impacting their project pipeline for the rest of the fiscal year.
