Pharma Sector Outlook Positive for H2 2026: Brokerage View

Religare Broking identifies the pharmaceutical sector as a top performer for the second half of 2026, citing stable export demand and robust product pipelines. In contrast, banking and defence sectors require a selective strategy due to mixed quarterly results and elevated valuations respectively. The Nifty 50 currently remains in a consolidation phase with support near 23,600.

Detailed Coverage

The Indian stock market has spent the last six weeks in a consolidation phase, with the Nifty 50 index testing its lower support levels. As investors assess the path forward for the second half of 2026, research analysis suggests a shift in focus toward sectors that offer both earnings resilience and favorable technical setups.

Pharmaceutical Sector Strengths

The pharmaceutical and healthcare space is currently being highlighted as a potential outperformer for the remainder of the year. This sentiment is driven by a combination of improving relative strength in charts and fundamental support. On the business side, companies in this sector are benefiting from stable export demand and a reduction in the pricing pressure that previously hampered growth in key international markets. Furthermore, a steady stream of new product launches and rising domestic healthcare consumption provide a defensive layer for investors, which is particularly relevant during phases where broader market direction is uncertain.

Banking and Defence: A Selective Strategy

The banking sector, a significant component of the Indian equity market, has entered a phase where performance is becoming increasingly dependent on individual bank results rather than sector-wide trends. Recent quarterly data from the first half of 2026 shows that while lenders such as ICICI Bank and Federal Bank have demonstrated resilience, others like HDFC Bank and Axis Bank have faced challenges, including pressure on profit margins. Consequently, market experts suggest that investors focus on lenders with stronger balance sheets rather than broad exposure to the sector.

Meanwhile, the defence sector continues to attract interest due to the government's long-term push for indigenization and consistent order inflows. However, the sector has seen a sharp rally over the past year, which has pushed valuations for companies like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bharat Forge, Data Patterns, and Solar Industries to relatively high levels. Investors are advised to look beyond the total order book value and scrutinize the actual ability of these companies to execute projects on time, as valuation risks now play a larger role in stock selection.

IT and Oil Marketing Companies

The IT sector is seeing a rebound, but market watchers suggest this may not yet be a definitive reversal in trend. A consistent move above the 29,800 level for the Nifty IT index would be necessary to establish a more sustained recovery, while 26,000 to 27,000 remains a key area of support. For Oil Marketing Companies, the primary concern remains crude oil price volatility. Higher crude prices typically create pressure on marketing margins, making it difficult for these firms to maintain profitability. Investors may monitor crude oil trends as a primary indicator, as a cooling in global energy prices would likely be required before a more positive outlook for these companies can be considered.
