Pfizer Q1 Earnings Review: Brokerage Sees Potential in New Drugs

ICICI Securities maintains a positive outlook on Pfizer Ltd following its June quarter results. The company is pivoting toward newer drugs like Prevenar20 and Eliquis to offset the loss of revenue from brands recently moved to Cipla. Investors are now tracking whether these product launches can effectively improve profit margins amid ongoing cost-cutting efforts.

Pfizer Ltd reported its financial performance for the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year, drawing attention from market analysts regarding its shifting product strategy. While the company faces a period of transition following the strategic out-licensing of four established brands—Corex Dx, Corex LS, Dolonex, and Neksium—to Cipla in December 2025, brokerage firm ICICI Securities has maintained its positive stance on the stock with a target price of ₹6,000.

Impact of Brand Transition and Margin Pressures

The decision to hand over the distribution and marketing of these four brands to Cipla was aimed at leveraging a wider distribution network. However, the immediate financial impact has been a cooling effect on revenue growth and gross margins. Investors have been observing this adjustment as the company moves away from legacy products that previously contributed to its top line. The success of this move will depend on whether the newer, high-value products can compensate for the revenue lost from these legacy portfolios.

Strategic Cost Savings and Portfolio Refresh

To manage its bottom line during this transition, the company has undertaken a significant restructuring of its operations. During the 2026 fiscal year, Pfizer reduced its total employee count by 22%, bringing the workforce to 1,254 employees. This reduction in overhead is designed to support better profit margins. Alongside these cost-saving measures, the company is prioritizing its new product pipeline, which includes the recent introduction of Prevenar20, Emblaveo, and Nurtec. These launches are seen as a critical growth engine, with the company looking to tap into the global pipeline of its parent organization for future product additions in the Indian market.

Financial Health and Dividend Outlook

Pfizer continues to maintain a robust balance sheet, holding approximately ₹31 billion in cash as of the end of FY26. This cash position, which represents about 14% of its market capitalization, provides the company with significant financial flexibility. In the previous fiscal year, the company paid a dividend of ₹75 per share, and shareholders are anticipating further healthy payouts given the company's capital allocation strategy. The valuation assigned by analysts, at 28 times the projected earnings per share for FY28, reflects an expectation that the company's earnings will stabilize as the new product mix takes hold.

Looking ahead, investors will be monitoring the revenue contribution from the newer drug launches to see if they can effectively offset the margins lost from the Cipla deal. The pace of execution for bringing global products to the Indian market remains a key factor to watch, as this will determine the company’s ability to sustain long-term earnings growth.
